Women's Soccer Gets Late Goal to Top Mount Olive

SALISBURY, NC -- Emily Auwarter (Shamong, NJ/Seneca HS) headed home a corner kick inside the final two minutes to lift host Catawba to a 2-1 win over Mount Olive in women’s soccer action on Wednesday night at Frock Field.  The win improves the Catawba Indians to 2-2-1, while the Trojans fall to 0-3-1.

Auwarter’s goal capped a comeback for Catawba after falling behind 1-0 after 15 minutes.  It was the 11th corner kick of the match for the Lady Indians, who also equalized late in the first half on a corner kick.  Sophie Waller (Watford, ENGLAND/St. Michael’s Catholic HS) delivered the corner on the game-winner.

Mount Olive took the early lead as Ellie Barnes played a nice ball into an unmarked Alex Wetherholt, who fired past Catawba keeper Angelica Pawlowski (Las Vegas, NV/Bishop Gorman HS) for the 1-0 edge in the 15th minute.  Catawba answered in the 38th minute when Haley Allen (Winston-Salem, NC/Reynolds HS) cross to the back post found Alex Hulsey (San Diego, CA/Francis Parker HS), who headed home the equalizer.

Catawba finished with a 17-5 edge in shots and took 11 corners to just one for the Trojans.  Pawlowski recorded three saves, while Mount Olive’s Stephanie McCoy stopped four shots.

Catawba returns to action on Saturday as Frock Field, hosting Carson-Newman at 1 p.m.
