Taylor Nets Winner for Men's Soccer in Home Opener
SALISBURY, NC -- Catawba scored a pair of second-half goals to rally for a 2-1 win over visiting Pfeiffer in men’s soccer action on Wednesday night at Frock Field. The Catawba Indians improve to 2-1, while the Falcons fall to 2-2-1.
Catawba trailed 1-0 at the half, but got goals from freshman Declan Stimson (Adelaide, AUSTRALIA/Trinity College HS) and Richmond Taylor (Hendersonville, TN/Hendersonville HS) to overcome the deficit and lift the Indians to a win in their home opener.
Pfeiffer scored in the 25th minute to go on top. Nathan Regis took a feed from Paco Cortez Vazquez and lifted a shot over Catawba keeper Frankie Cardelle (Salisbury, NC/Salisbury HS/NC Central). The lead held up until late in the contest when Stimson curved a 25 yard shot into the far upper corner in the 76th minute to pull the Indians even.
Six minutes later, Catawba benefited from a miskick on a defensive clear that Taylor raced onto on the right side of the box. He was able to chip a shot over Falcon keeper Nicolas Dulac just inside the far post for the winner.
Catawba held a 10-7 edge in shots with both teams putting two on goal. The Indians took nine corner kicks to just two for the Falcons. Cardelle made the lone save. Evan Harvey (Apex, NC/Apex HS) did not record a save during the second half for Catawba, but had to weather a couple of late chances in the box for Pfeiffer.
Catawba returns to conference action on Saturday as the Indians host Carson-Newman at Frock Field at 3:30 p.m.
