Locklear's late jumper puts Women's Basketball back in SAC leadJEFFERSON CITY, TN – Catawba junior center Danyel Locklear (Pembroke, NC) scored a jumper with 30 seconds to play to break a 61-61 tie and lift the Lady Indians back into first place with a 66-61 win over host Carson-Newman in South Atlantic Conference women’s basketball action on Saturday night at Holt Fieldhouse. The win improves Catawba to 15-4 overall and 6-1 in the SAC, while the Lady Eagles fall to 11-9 and 5-2. It marks the second time that Catawba has completed the first half of league play with a 6-1 mark, the only other coming in two years ago when the Lady Indians won their first league title. Carson-Newman jumped out to a 12-2 lead in the opening three minutes, but the Lady Indians used a 12-0 run, capped by a three-pointer and a three-point play by Christina Carmon (Stafford, VA) for a 16-14 Tribe lead at the 12:47 mark of the opening half. The lead would change hands six times before Catawba took a 33-32 lead at the break. It would be Catawba that would gain a big edge to open the final half. The Lady Indians went on a 13-2 run to open the half to grab a 46-34 lead four minutes into the frame. Carson-Newman whittled the deficit away and regained the lead at 55-54 with 6:46 left on a jumper by Andrea Fitzgerald. The Lady Eagles would take a 59-54 lead on a layup by Fitzgerald before five straight points by Catawba’s Ashley Cox (Richmond, VA) tied the game at 59-59 at the 2:57 mark. Lynn Morancie (Houston, TX) put Catawba back on top with a pair of free throws with 1:28 remaining, but Carson-Newman answered on a jumper by Kedrin Madar with 58 seconds left. Locklear then put Catawba ahead for good with her jumper with 29 seconds remaining. Fitzgerald had a chance to tie with 15 seconds remaining, but missed on a pair of free throws. Locklear made two free throws with five seconds left and Carmon added one of two after a technical on the Carson-Newman bench for the final margin. Dorthell Little (Rockingham, NC) led Catawba, posting a double-double with 19 points and 11 rebounds. Morancie added 17 points for the Lady Indians. Locklear was held to just six points, with four key ones coming in the final minute. She had 10 rebounds. Monica Ashburn led Carson-Newman with 20 points and seven rebounds, while Fitzgerald added 15 and six boards. Catawba shot 55% in the final half and held the Lady Eagles to just 36%.
