Volleyball Plays Well in Losing Effort vs. #16 Wingate
SALISBURY, NC -- Wingate, ranked 16th in NCAA II, claimed a 3-0 win over host Catawba in South Atlantic Conference volleyball action on Friday night at Goodman Gym. The Bulldogs won by the scores of 25-17, 25-20 and 25-14 to improve to 7-2 overall and 4-0 in the SAC. The Catawba Indians fall to 1-4 and 1-2.
Susie Murach led Wingate with 13 kills, while Anna Hilton added 11 kills, nine digs and two blocks. Setter Iris Brewer handed out 39 assists and served a pair of aces. Libero Stephanie Tassone collected 13 digs with four aces.
Haley Lanier (Burgaw, NC/Pender Co. HS) posted 11 kills to pace Catawba. Rachel Gallup (Fredericksburg, VA/Courtland HS) followed with six kills and added a pair of blocks. Libero McKenzie Garrison (Newton, NC/Maiden HS) dug up 10 balls and setter Kaytee Frabota (Sterling Heights, MI/Henry Ford II HS) had 20 assists.
Catawba played well early and led the opening set 10-8 after a kill from Emily Richardson ((Salem, VA/Salem HS). Wingate responded with kills from Lexi Potter and Brewer to start a 6-0 run that gave the Bulldogs a 14-10 edge. Leading 16-14, Wingate pulled away, winning five straight points that started with three kills from Hilton. A Shelly Stumpff kill ended the set.
Bri Howard (Graham, NC/S. Alamance HS) had consecutive kills to open the second set for Catawba and the Lady Indians held a 12-9 lead after a stretch that saw Lanier put down three kills. Wingate finally went on top at 18-16 on kills from Potter and Brewer then Murach ended the set on a kill.
Wingate got out quickly in set three, leading 11-2 with a pair of aces from Tassone and another from Murach. The Bulldogs kept the big margin until Stumpff ended it with Wingate’s eighth ace of the match.
Catawba faces another league opponent on Saturday afternoon as the Lady Indians face off against Coker, one of the new SAC members, at 1 p.m.
