Football Blanked by Newberry in SAC Opener

SALISBURY, NC -- Newberry shut down host Catawba in a steady rain, posting a 27-0 victory in South Atlantic Conference football action on Saturday night at Shuford Stadium and Kirkland Field.  The Wolves improve to 3-0 overall and 1-0 in the SAC, while the Catawba Indians fall to 2-1 and 0-1.  It marked the first time Catawba had been shut out since the 1994 season, a span of 210 games.

Newberry scored a pair of touchdowns late in the first quarter to gain control of the contest.  On a fourth down play, WT Murden completed a 34-yard pass to Corey Washington for a 7-0 lead at the 6:36 mark of the quarter.  Following a punt return of 19 yards by Jason Livingstone deep into Catawba territory, Washington and Murden were at it again, this time from 11 yards out for a 14-0 edge.

Catawba’s offense never got going, amassing just 76 yards in the opening half.  Kyle Clark added a 21-yard field goal with just over five minutes to go in the half for Newberry for a 17-0 margin.  The Wolves capped the first half scoring as they capitalized on a botched snap on a punt by Catawba.  Dureal Elmore ran in from two-yards away to give Newberry a 24-0 lead at the break.

Neither team did much offensively in the second half.  Catawba managed 126 yards, while Newberry had 106 total yards.  The only points came early in the third quarter on a 24-yard field goal from Clark.

Murden was the most effective player in the conditions as he completed 17-of-28 passes for 190 yards and two scores for Newberry.  He ran for another 18 yards.  Romelo Doctor ran for 30 yards for the Wolves.  Washington had five catches for 81 yards and the two scores.

Danny O’Brien (Kernersville, NC/E. Forsyth HS/Wisconsin) threw for 72 yards on 10-of-21 passing for the Indians.  David Burgess (Morganton, NC/Freedom HS) led the ground game with 63 yards, while Trey Mashore (Woodleaf, NC/W. Rowan HS) added 58 yards rushing.

Catawba heads to Carson-Newman next Saturday for a 1 p.m. kickoff.
