Baseball opens with doubleheader sweep of Claflin

SALISBURY, NC -- Catawba College opened its 2003 baseball season with a doubleheader sweep of visiting Claflin on Sunday afternoon at Newman Park. The Indians won by the scores of 12-3 and 8-2 to post a 2-0 mark on the year. Claflin fell to 0-4. Freshmen Jimbo Davis (Salisbury, NC) and Nick Lefko (Faith, NC) homered in each game, while starters Zach Snyder (Lexington, NC) and Chris Abernathy (Claremont, NC) nearly tossed no-hitters in the sweep. Junior Spence Southard (Greensboro, NC) collected five hits in the doubleheader, scored four runs and had two RBI, while Scott Searles (Boston, MA) was 4-foe-8 with a RBI and three runs scored. Chad Hill (Bennett, NC) opened the scoring for the Tribe in the first as he singled home Southard, who had doubled with two outs. Jeff Boyles (Pinnacle, NC) added a two-run home run in the second for a 3-0 edge, which would be more than enough for Snyder. The junior tossed seven innings of no-hit ball, allowing only one baserunner, a walk to Tripp Williams (Orangeburg, SC) in the fifth, with nine strikeouts. The Tribe scored unearned runs in the fourth and sixth, while Davis singled home a run in the seventh. Catawba erupted in the eight, scoring six times. Lefko had a solo shot, while Davis added a three-run blast. Darryl Davis (Holly Hill, SC) homered for Claflin in the eighth and David Hudson (Lexington, SC) had a two-run single in the ninth. Catawba went on top after an inning of the second game, scoring three unearned runs in the opening frame. Southard had a RBI-double, while Boyles later singled home another. Catawba’s next three runs would be on solo homers by Blair Reynolds (King, NC), Davis and Lefko. Abernathy surrendered three hits, none before the fifth, and walked a pair in his six innings of work. The senior allowed two unearned runs and had four strikeouts. James Aimar (Bowman, SC) had two hits in the loss for the Panthers. #####
