Volleyball Overpowered in Fifth Set in Loss at Tusculum
GREENEVILLE, TN -- Tusculum used a strong fifth set to grab a 3-2 win over visiting Catawba in South Atlantic Conference volleyball action on Friday night at Pioneer Arena. The Pioneers won by the scores of 26-28, 25-15, 25-19, 20-25 and 15-2 to improve to 8-4 overall and 3-2 in the SAC. The Catawba Indians fall to 2-5 and 2-3.
Freshman Bri Howard (Graham, NC/S. Alamance HS) led Catawba with a dozen kills and added five blocks. Emily Richardson (Salem, VA/Salem HS) followed with 11 kills and recorded six blocks. Alex Hopper (Madison, NC/McMichael HS) and Haley Lanier (Burgaw, NC/Pender Co. HS) nearly posted double digit kill totals with nine each. Setter Kaytee Frabotta (Sterling Heights, MI/Henry Ford II HS) handed out 44 assists and libero McKenzie Garrison (Newton, NC/Maiden HS) posted 21 digs.
Catawba was down 15-10 in the opening set, but got an ace from Frabotta and a block from Richardson following a timeout to cut the margin to 15-13. Howard and Richardson combined on a block to pull the Lady Indians even at 16-all and a kill from Erin Morant (Bealeton, VA/Liberty HS) gave Catawba a 19-18 lead. Catawba withstood a set point at 24-23 from Tusculum and finally claimed the set on the third try.
Tusculum jumped out to a 4-1 lead in set two and eventually led 12-7. A kill from Megan Hasse stretched the margin to 21-14 and Rachel Garnett killed off the set point. The Pioneers hit at 56% in the set.
The third set followed the second set as the Pioneers raced to a 7-1 lead. Garnett and Kassie Voelker each had two kills in the run. Sarah Bouley pushed the margin to 19-11 before the Lady Indians rallied back within 23-19. Richardson had two kills in the rally, but the Pioneers won the final two points of the set.
Catawba got three early kills from Hopper to lead set four 5-2. Tusculum was able to take a couple of one point leads, before three straight points from Catawba late in the set put the Lady Indians up 21-18. Richardson had two kills and Howard a block in the final push to win the set.
The fifth set was one to forget for Catawba. Tusculum scored the first six points with two Garnett kills and three Lady Indian hitting errors. Caitlyn Dean had two aces and Danae Stauffer two kills as the lead ballooned to 14-1. Voelker ended the match with a kill.
Garnett led the Pioneers with 18 kills. Voelker added 15 kills, while Hasse had 14 kills and 13 digs. Dean dug up 25 balls with Hannah Berling posting 42 assists.
Catawba finishes up the weekend road trip tomorrow with a 2 p.m. match at Mars Hill.
