Morant Posts Double-Digit Kills as Volleyball Falls at Mars Hill

MARS HILL, NC -- Host Mars Hill claimed a four-set win over Catawba in South Atlantic Conference volleyball action on Saturday afternoon at Stanford Arena.  The Lions improve to 6-4 overall and 4-2 in the SAC with the 23-25, 25-16, 25-21 and 25-13 victory.  The Catawba Indians fall to 2-6 and 2-4.

Erin Morant (Bealeton, VA/Liberty HS) led Catawba on the afternoon with 10 kills and five blocks.  Haley Lanier (Burgaw, NC/Pender Co. HS) collected nine kills and  Alex Hopper (Madison, NC/McMichael HS) eight more.  Setter Kaytee Frabotta (Sterling Heights, MI/Henry Ford II HS) posted 32 assists and libero McKenzie Garrison (Newton, NC/Maiden HS) had a team-high 14 digs.

Catawba pulled out a tight first set.  After a late combo block from Morant and Lanier tied the set, Taylor Houser (Mt. Holly, NC/S. Point HS/Pfeiffer) served an ace for a 22-21 lead.  Morant added a kill and a Mars Hill hitting error pushed the Lady Indians to set point.  After two kills from Marissa Wixson cut the margin to 24-23, Morant killed off the final point.

The Lady Indians started strong with the first four points of the second set and led 8-4.  That's when Mars Hill took over.  The Lions reeled off 13 of the next 14 points to grab a 17-9 lead.  A Morant kill made it 19-15, but the Lions stayed in front to even the match.

It was Mars Hill that started quickly in set three with the opening four points.  Two came on kills from MaryKate Griffin and was capped on an ace by Victoria Kaiser.  The Lady Indians were eventually down 12-6, but a couple kills from Morant, an ace from Frabotta and a kill from Bri Howard (Graham, NC/S. Alamance HS) pulled Catawba within 13-11.  Mars Hill never let the lead get down to a point, going back up 19-14 on a kill from Wixson.  Griffin eventually kills off the final point.

Mars Hill dominated the fourth set.  Kaiser served four aces in a 12-0 run that put the Lions up 15-2.  Catawba was not able to get back into the set and a kill from Toni Cole ended the match.

Wixson tallied 23 kills for the Lions.  Cole recorded 20 kills and Griffin added 13.  Kaiser finished with five aces and 19 digs.  Setter Courtney Worthington handed out 62 assists.

Catawba stays on the road next week with matches at Carson-Newman on Friday night at 7 p.m. and Lincoln Memorial on Saturday at 2 p.m.
