Women's Soccer Picks Up First SAC Win 2-1 at Newberry
NEWBERRY, SC -- Catawba scored a pair of first-half goals and went on to post a 2-1 win over host Newberry in South Atlantic Conference women's soccer action on Saturday afternoon at the Smith Road Complex. The Catawba Indians improve to 3-4-1 overall and 1-2-1 in the SAC, while the Wolves fall to 4-3 and 2-2.
Amy Iwanicki (Calgary, Alberta, CANADA/St. Francis HS/Tennessee-Martin) put the Lady Indians on top when she headed home a cross from Anna Toole (Greenville, SC/Mann HS) in the 20th minute. Toole's cross found Iwanicki for a strike from about eight yards out. Catawba doubled the lead six minutes later as a low cross was deflected into the goal by a Newberry defender.
Newberry pulled within a goal just before the hour has Breanna Naranjo was able to tap home a pass in front of the goal from Gabrielle Brodie. That would be as close as Newberry would get as Angelica Pawlowki (Las Vegas, NV/Bishop Gorman HS) had six saves on the day to limit the Wolves. Rebecca Darley also had six saves for Newberry.
Catawba held a 15-10 edge in shots with eight on goal, one more than Newberry. Catawba took eight corners to just two for the Wolves.
Catawba will step out of conference on Wednsday, traveling to Chowan for a 2 p.m. match.
