Men's Soccer Settles For Scoreless Draw With Newberry
NEWBERRY, SC -- Catawba and Newberry battled to a scoreless draw in South Atlantic Conference men's soccer action on Saturday afternoon at the Smith Road Complex. The Catawba Indians now stand at 3-2-1 overall and 1-2-1 in the SAC. The Wolves are 1-6-1 and 1-2-1.
Neither team found much offense in the opening half with only four shots taken, three by Catawba. The game opened up some in the second half with the Indians firing eight shots, but only one on goal. After regulation Newberry had put two of five shots on target and Catawba just three of 11.
Overtime was much of the same. Each team had three shots in the extra 20 minutes and one on goal from each side. Frankie Cardelle (Salisbury, NC/Salisbury HS/NC Central) gets credited with the shutout with three saves over the 110 minutes. Patrick Sweatt made four saves in getting a shutout for Newberry.
Catawba travels to Chowan on Wednesday for a 4:30 p.m. non-conference meeting with the Hawks.
