SAC Honors Taylor and Tarrats as Football Players of the Week
ROCK HILL, SC -- Catawba wide receiver Carlos Tarrats, Catawba linebacker Jason Taylor and Newberry kicker Kyle Clark have been selected as the SAC Football Players of the Week for games play September 28. It was announced by the league office on Monday.
Tarrats, the offensive selection, had the biggest game of his freshman season at Catawba on Saturday, finishing with nine receptions for 97 yards and a pair of touchdowns in the Indians’ 25-22 upset of 10th-ranked Carson-Newman. After having already scored a touchdown in the opening period, Tarrats hauled in a 34-yard pass with 56 seconds remaining in the fourth quarter for what proved to be the game-winning score. On the season, Tarrats has 15 catches – which are the fifth-most in the conference – for 151 yards and three touchdowns.
Defensive Player of the Week honors went to Taylor, who recorded a game-high 16 tackles on Saturday, helping lead Catawba to its first win over Carson-Newman since 2007. Included in the junior’s performance was half a sack and an additional tackle-for-loss. Behind Taylor, the Catawba defense held Carson-Newman to just 236 rushing yards, more than 100 below the Eagles’ season average. Taylor currently ranks fifth in the SAC with an average of 9.8 tackles per game.
Clark earns SAC Special Teams Player of the Week honors for the second-straight week after connecting on his only field-goal attempt and all three extra points on Saturday in a 24-10 Newberry win over Mars Hill. The field goal came from 40 yards out as time expired in the first half. Clark also averaged 44.8 yards on six punts, including kicks of 71 yards and 53 yards. The 71-yarder was the longest in the SAC and the sixth-longest in Division II this season. The sophomore’s punting average of 38.6 yards currently ranks third in the conference, while his 19 points in the kicking game rank fourth.
