Catawba Shuts Out Chowan 7-0 in Women's Soccer Action
MURFREESBORO, NC – Catawba College shutout the Chowan University Hawks 7-0 on Wednesday evening in women’s soccer action. The Catawba Lady Indians now improve to 4-4-1 on the season while Chowan falls to 0-9.
Catawba got on the board in just the sixth minute as senior, Amy Iwanicki (Calgary, ALB, CANADA/St. Francis/Tenn-Martin), put the ball into the net after receiving a cross from Mary Kirkman (Burlington, NC/Williams HS). Shortly after in the 18th minute Kirkman assisted in another goal, this time to Alex Hulsey (San Diego, CA/Francis Parker) after she put in a Kirkman shot that deflected off the crossbar.
With less than a minute left before the half, Fresham Kali Chaplin (N. Palm Beach, FL/Benjamin School) would add a third goal for the Indians, assisted by Mariah Osenga (Kernersville, NC/E. Forsyth HS).
In the second half, Kirkman would record a third assist in the game with a cross to Sophie Waller (Watford, ENGLAND/St. Michael’s Catholic). Less than two minutes later Waller would send a corner across that middle that Hulsey would head in for her second goal to put the Indians up 5-0.
Kirkman would close out the game scoring two unassisted goals of her own. The first came in the 71st minute and the second in the 75th.
Chowan was not recorded with a shot in the shutout. Catawba on the other hand took 37, with 11 being on target. Catawba also dominated in corner kicks 12-0, taking six in each half.
Chowan split time in goal as Monica Hayward started the game and gave up the first two goals before getting quickly replaced by Tara Maready. Maready was created with 72 minutes in net giving up the remaining five goals and recording two saves. Angelica Pawlowski (Las Vegas, NV/Bishop Gorman HS) was in the net for Catawba but saw no action all game.
Catawba returns to action on Saturday, returning to South Atlantic Conference action against Coker. Kickoff is set for 1:30pm.
