Richardson Posts 10 Kills as Volleyball Falls in Four to C-N
JEFFERSON CITY, NC -- Carson-Newman picked up a four-set win over visiting Catawba in South Atlantic Conference volleyball action on Friday night at Holt Fieldhouse. The Eagles won by the scores of 25-17, 25-18, 21-25 and 25-12 to improve to 8-6 overall and 3-4 in the SAC. The Catawba Indians fall to 2-7 and 2-5.
Emily Richardson (Salem, VA/Salem HS) led Catawba with 10 kills, while Alex Hopper (Madison, NC/McMichael HS) and Savannah Tomlinson (Remsenburg, NY/Westhampton Beach HS/UNCG) added six kills. Erin Morant (Bealeton, VA/Liberty HS) posted five kills with four blocks and a pair of aces. Setter Kaytee Frabotta (Sterling Heights, MI/Henry Ford II HS) handed out 33 assists and collected seven digs.
The teams traded the opening points of the first set before a four-point run, capped by a kill from Rachel Harper, pushed Carson-Newman lead to 9-4. Another kill from Harper upped the lead to 14-6. Catawba tried to make a late run, reeling off four points to cut the margin to 20-15. Hopper had a kill and block in the run, while Morant served a pair of aces. Lauren Santarelli killed a point to stop the run and the Eagles would take the set on a kill from JaLesa Beaver.
Carson-Newman jumped out to an 8-3 lead in set two, but saw Catawba rally back to within 8-7 after a block and kill from Morant and an ace from Leah Ryan (Westborough, MA/Westborough HS). The Eagles kept the lead and moved back out to a 13-9 edge. Catawba never got closer than two points the rest of the set which ended on a combo block from Beaver and Santarelli.
Catawba pulled out the third set with a late rally. The Lady Indians had led early at 9-5, but Carson-Newman came back to lead at 14-13. Down 19-17, Catawba got a kill from Caitlin Turner (Chesapeake, VA/Hickory HS) and an ace from McKenzie Garrison (Newton, NC/Maiden HS) to tie the set. A pair of C-N errors gave the Lady Indians a 21-19 edge. Catawba stayed on top and won the final two points on a kill from Haley Lanier (Burgaw, NC/Pender Co. HS) and an Eagle attack error.
The Eagles pulled away early in set four. Leading 5-4, C-N reeled off six straight points to take control. Harper had two kills and Kiayna O'Neal a pair of blocks in the run. The Eagles continued to stretch the lead as a kill from Santarelli upped the margin to 19-8 and C-N went on to take the win.
Harper pounded down 21 kills for the Eagles, while adding seven digs and a pair of blocks. Santarelli picked up 11 kills with six digs and two blocks. Setter Kristen Pickett totaled 48 assists with three aces and libero Taylor Lowe had 16 digs. Emily Schultz posted nine kills with five blocks, while O'Neal had six kills and five blocks.
Catawba will tangle with Lincoln Memorial on Saturday at 2 p.m. in Harrogate, TN.
