Double-doubles by Cox and Locklear propel Women's Basetball to win over LR

SALISBURY, NC -– Catawba College placed four players in double figures and defeated visiting Lenoir-Rhyne 83-71 in South Atlantic Conference women’s basketball action on Saturday afternoon at Goodman Gym. The win keeps Catawba in first place in the league with a 16-4 overall mark, 7-1 in the SAC. Lenoir-Rhyne falls to 10-10 and 2-6. The first half was a see-saw battle that saw the lead change hands 13 times with Catawba pulling out to a 37-35 edge at the break. The Lady Indians would begin to pull away early in the second half. Leading 39-38, Catawba went on a 16-4 run to build a 55-42 edge with 10:51 to play. Sophomore Ashley Cox (Richmond, VA) started the run with a three-pointer, finishing the game with 19 points and a season-high 10 assists. Lenoir-Rhyne never closed within 10 points the rest of the way as Catawba would lead by 15 on several occasions. Danyel Locklear (Pembroke, NC) also posted a double-double for Catawba with 18 points and 13 rebounds. Fourteen of her points came in the final half. Dorthell Little (Rockingham, NC) had 17 points and eight boards, while Lynn Morancie (Houston, TX) added 16 points. The Bears were led by Maya Grady (Greer, SC), who scored a game-high 22 points, adding six assists and seven steals. Three others reached double figures as Shea Blacknell (Chapel Hill, NC) tallied 13 points, Kim Small (Greensboro, NC) had 12 and Heather Burleson (Spruce Pine, NC) followed with 10. Lenoir-Rhyne set a record in the loss by making its 107th three-pointer of the season. Catawba shot 49% for the game, while holding the Bears to just 39% and also held a 43-33 edge on the boards. #####
