Volleyball Struggles in Loss at Queens
CHARLOTTE, NC -- Host Queens swept past Catawba in South Atlantic Conference volleyball action on Tuesday night at the Levine Center. The Royals won by the scores of 25-15, 25-16 and 25-11 to improve to 4-7 overall and 4-5 in the SAC. The Catawba Indians fall to 2-9 and 2-7.
Catawba struggled to find its hitting touch, finishing at 0%, which included negative numbers in the first set. Haley Lanier (Burgaw, NC/Pender Co. HS) produced a team-high six kills on the night with Bri Howard (Graham, NC/S. Alamance HS) and Audrey Hoffman (Dacula, GA/Mill Creek HS) each adding three kills. Erin Morant (Bealeton, VA/Liberty HS) recorded three blocks.
Queens used a five-point run midway through the first set to go on top 13-7. Brittney Barren served a pair of aces in that spurt. A Howard kill pulled Catawba within 16-13, but the Royals answered with an 8-1 run that was capped by a pair of aces from Alexa Sparrell. Meredith Jones killed off the set point.
Lanier had a kill to give Catawba an 8-7 lead in set two before Queens took over. The Royals scored five straight points which ended with a pair of aces from Taylor Riley. Queens continued to pull away, leading 17-10 after an ace from Jocelyn Kellinger. Anna Gibbs killed off the final point.
Queens took control of the third set with an early 7-0 run to lead 9-3. Once the lead grew to 12-4, Catawba never got closer than seven points the rest of the set. A kill from Barren closed out the match.
Keri Kemp led Queens with a match-high 13 kills to go with three aces and a pair of blocks. Anna Gibbs added nine kills and two blocks. Sparrell and Kellinger also served three aces among the 13 total for the Royals. Barren had six kills, three blocks and two aces. Setter Taylor Riley handed out 30 assists.
Catawba will returns home this weekend after five straight matches on the road. First up for the Lady Indians will be Newberry on Friday night at 7 p.m.
