Lady Indians Fall In Final Minute to Queens 4-3
SALISBURY, NC -- A ninetieth minute goal by senior Brooke Foil lifted Queens University over host Catawba College 4-3 in South Atlantic Conference Women’s Soccer action Wednesday night at Frock Field. With the loss Catawba College falls to 5-5-1 and 2-3-1 in the SAC. Queens improves to 7-2-2 and 3-1-2, respectively.
Tied at three apiece, Foil’s goal occurred with just 38 seconds remaining in regulation. Foil powered home the game-winner from the top of the box past Catawba’s Angelica Pawlowski (Las Vegas, NV/Bishop Gorman)
Catawba was the first to draw blood in the 21st minute when sophomore, Mary Kirkman (Burlington, NC/Williams), put one past goalie Jessyca Young off a Sophie Waller (Watford, ENGLAND/St. Michael’s Catholic) assist.
The Royals would respond just five minutes later off an Ashley Osiecki corner. Brenna Kate Grass rebounded in the goal off a missed header from Sarah Johnson. Grass would give Queens the lead in the 30th minute with her second goal off the night. Caitlyn Rodrigues recorded the assist.
The Lady Indians evened the score seven minutes into the second half. Juliana Conte’s (Hampton,ONT,CANADA/Holy Trinity Catholic)shot missed off the right post which Karen Presnell (Salisbury, NC/Salisbury) corralled and put in.
Kelli Gottry would put in a cross from Emily Werner just one minute later to retake the lead for the Royals at 3-2.
Catawba senior Athena Bless (Asheboro, NC/SW Randolph) drilled in a long ball from the right corner of the penalty box into the upper left of the Queens goal to tie the game back at three apiece.
Both teams were even most of the game statistically. Queens led in shots 13-11, while Catawba took more corners, 5-4. Pawlowski recorded five saves on the night for the Lady Indians. Young saved four shots of her own.
The Lady Indians return to Frock Field on Saturday as they host South Atlantic Conference opponent, Tusculum, at 5:00 pm.
