Catawba Drops Four-Setter to Anderson
SALISBURY, NC -- Anderson posted a four-set win over host Catawba in South Atlantic Conference volleyball action on Saturday afternoon at Goodman Gym. The Trojans lost the first set 25-16 then won the next three sets 25-17, 25-21 and 25-22 to improve to 8-7 overall and 7-3 in the SAC. The Catawba Indians fall to 3-10 and 3-8.
Anderson's Shannon Gillespie led all players with 22 kills and added 18 digs to lead the Trojans. Hailey Pittman added 10 kills and five blocks, while Tinsley Hallman picked up nine kills. Libero Alix Hooker had 20 digs and setter Priscilla Irizarry handed out 36 assists and served an ace.
Rachel Gallup (Fredericksburg, VA/Courtland HS) had 13 kills for Catawba. Erin Morant (Bealeton, VA/Liberty HS) collected 10 kills with four blocks. Libero Leah Ryan (Westborough, MA/Westborough HS) recorded 27 digs with a pair of aces and setter Kaytee Frabota (Sterling Heights, MI/Henry Ford II HS) handed out 45 assists with 16 digs and three blocks.
The opening set was tied at 8-8, but kills from Morant and Gallup and an ace from Taylor Houser (Mt. Holly, NC/S. Points HS/Pfeiffer) put Catawba up 12-8. A kill from Bri Howard (Graham, NC/S. Alamance HS) moved the lead to 17-10. Anderson got to within 19-15 before a Howard kill and two aces from Ryan pushed the lead to 23-15. Haley Lanier (Burgaw, NC/Pender Co. HS) killed off set point.
Anderson responded in set two and jumped to an 8-3 lead after an ace from Irizarry. The lead grew to 17-10 after a kill from Gillespie. Kills from Howard, Frabotta and Lanier trimmed the Catawba deficit to 19-15, but after a kill from Gillespie the Trojans finished the set off, ending it on a kill from Pittman.
Catawba built a big lead in set three at 16-8, but Anderson rallied. The Trojans went on a 9-1 run to tie the set at 17-17. Catawba moved back out 20-17 only to see the Trojans win eight of the next nine points, four on kills from Gillespie.
The fourth set was tight. A Pittman kill had Anderson up 13-10 then Catawba battled back to lead 17-15 after a combo block from Frabotta and Morant. Allison Gaminde had two key kills in a 3-0 run to put Anderson on top 20-18. Catawba twice got within a point the last at 23-22 before a kill from Pittman and then an attack error to end the match.
Catawba will host Lenoir-Rhyne for its next match on Friday at 7 p.m.
