Women's Soccer Claims Shutout Win Over Tusculum
SALISBURY, NC -- Catawba scored a goal in each half to post a 2-0 shutout over visiting Tusculum in South Atlantic Conference women's soccer action on Saturday at Frock Field. The win improves the Catawba Indians to 6-5-1 overall and 3-3-1 in the SAC. The Pioneers fall to 5-4-3 and 3-1-2 and see a six-match unbeaten streak snapped.
Catawba jumped on top just three minutes into the contest. Juliana Conte (Hampton, Ontario, CANADA/Trinity Catholic HS) took a cross from Allison Baucom (Salisbury, NC/W. Rowan HS) and floated a shot over Pioneer keeper Marissa Williams for the early lead.
The Lady Indians surrendered just one shot in the opening half while firing off 14 shots at the Tusculum goal. Catawba added to its lead in the 53rd minute as Conte combined to assist on a goal by Mary Kirkman (Burlington, NC/Williams HS). That would be all Catawba would need as it went on to post the shutout.
Bethany Davis (Salisbury, MD/Parkside HS) delivered the clean sheet, making four saves. She denied a penalty kick chance from Monica Perez with nine minutes remaining after the Lady Indians were called for a handball in the box. Williams collected three saves for the Pioneers. Catawba finished with a 17-7 edge in shots with each team taking four corner kicks.
Catawba steps out of conference to host Limestone on Wednesday at 5 p.m.
