Stimson Strikes Twice to Lead Catawba Past Tusculum 3-1
SALISBURY, NC -- The Catawba College men's soccer team defeated visiting Tusculum College 3-1 in South Atlantic Conference action on Saturday night at Frock Field. Declan Stimson scored two goals for the Indians to help them improve to 6-3-1 on the season and 3-3-1 in conference play. With the loss Tusculum fell to 3-7 overall and 1-5 in the SAC.
In the 13th minute of the game Catawba jumped out front when Kevin Scott put one in the net after a give and go with Kenny Bonilla from the corner.
With three minutes remaining in the half Tusculum was called for a foul after being on the attack. Catawba keeper, Frankie Cardelle, booted the free kick three quarters of the field before bouncing off the crossbar just above the diving arms of Tusculum's goalie, Ashley Elsey. The missed shot bounced right in front of the net before Stimson collected the ball and put it for his first goal of the day.
In the second half, Tusculum would respond with a free kick header by Ricardo Da Silva on a long ball from Roberto Pimentel to bring the Pioneers within one.
Stimson would put the game out of reach in the 70th minute with a goal off a Matt Wilkinson pass. Stimson came close to a hat trick several times in the remaining minutes.
Catawba outshot the Pioneers 14-6. The Indians also took ten corners to Tusculum's three. Cardelle recorded just one save on the day for Catawba while Elsey saved three before being benched at halftime for Victor Ohlin. Ohlin tallied two saves in the second half.
Catawba will face Belmont Abbey in non-conference play on Wednesday, October 16th, at 7:30 pm.
