Baseball takes two of three in Williams ClassicSALISBURY, NC -- Catawba College defeated Pfeiffer 3-1 in action at the Dick Williams “Good Guys” Baseball Tournament at Newman Park on Monday afternoon. The Indians improve to 4-1 with the win, while Pfeiffer falls to 1-2. Catawba’s Brian Hatley scattered five hits and allowed just one run over five and a third innings to grab the win, while Jeff Abdelnour recorded the final out to earn his first save. The Indians opened the scoring as Blair Reynolds doubled to lead off the first, was balked to second and scored on Spence Southard’s one-out grounder. Back-to-back run-scoring doubles by Aaron Rimer and Jeff Boyles in the second staked the Tribe to a 3-0 edge. Pfeiffer would get a run back in the fourth as Jordan Taylor drove home Robert Scott with a two-out single. The Falcons loaded the bases with two outs in the fifth, but Hatley got Bryant Parnell to ground out to third to end the inning. Pfeiffer would again threaten in the seventh, as Mark Schleicker and Zach Greene singled with one out. After a fielder’s choice, Abdelnour retired Parnell on a foul out to the catcher to end the game. Bobby Helms took the loss for Pfeiffer. He allowed the three runs on six hits over four innings. Taylor collected two hits for the Falcons, while Boyles had two hits for Catawba and Rimer collected a pair of doubles. On Saturday, Catawba opened its tournament play be rallying to defeat Limestone 6-2. Matt Baker’s grand slam with two outs in the fifth brought Catawba back from a 2-1 deficit. Mitch House had put the Saints on top with a two-out, two-run homer in the fourth. Zach Snyder earned the win for Catawba, allowing six hits over his five innings. Chad Hill had three hits and two RBI for Catawba, while House had two hits for Limestone. The Tribe fell to Belmont Abbey 14-4 on Sunday. Ian Gibson hit a pair of home runs, including a grand slam, to drive in six runs as the Crusaders topped the host team. Belmont Abbey had five homers in the game. Nick Bland had one of those and delivered three RBI. Jaymie Russ scattered nine hits and allowed four runs over six innings of work. Blair Reynolds homered for Catawba for one of his two hits. Chad Hill and Aaron Rimer also collected a pair of hits. #####
