Kirkman Lifts Women's Soccer Over Limestone With OT Winner
SALISBURY, NC -- Sophomore Mary Kirkman (Burlington, NC/Williams HS) scored a little over four minutes into overtime to lift host Catawba to a 2-1 victory over Limestone in women’s soccer action on Wednesday night at Frock Field. The win lifts Catawba Indians to 7-5-1 overall, while the Saints fall to (4-5-3).
Kirkman’s goal capped a Catawba rally from a 1-0 deficit at halftime. Allison Baucom (Salisbury, NC/W. Rowan HS) pulled the Lady Indians even three minutes into the second half as she delivered a perfectly lofted shot from well outside the box that went just under the crossbar.
Catawba pressured Limestone for most of the second half, out-shooting the Saints 16-3 after halftime. Whitney Salonich (Lexington, SC) recorded nine saves and was also helped out by Paige Jellison, who saved a shot off the line.
After a shot from Sophie Waller (Watford, ENGLAND/St. Michael’s Catholic HS) early in overtime went wide, Kirkman settled a cross from Juliana Conte (Hampton, Ontario, CANADA/Trinity Catholic HS) in the box and beat Salonich to her right for the winner.
Limestone took the lead in the 35th minute as Gabriella Reid just beat Catawba keeper Bethany Davis (Salisbury, MD/Parkside HS) to a ball at the top of the box and was able to direct a shot into an open goal as the two collided. David made one save for the Lady Indians. Catawba would outshoot Limestone 25-6 in the match and took eight corners to three for the Saints.
Catawba hits the road on Saturday, returning to league action at Brevard at 1:30 p.m. The Lady Indians sit three goals shy of notching the 1,000th in school history.
