Gallup's 12 Kills Leads Volleyball in Loss to Lenoir-Rhyne
SALISBURY, NC -- Lenoir-Rhyne claimed a four-set win over host Catawba in South Atlantic Conference volleyball action on Friday night at Goodman Gym. The Bears won by the scores of 25-16, 17-25, 25-20 and 25-20 as they improve to 11-5 overall and 8-4 in the SAC. The Catawba Indians fall to 3-11 and 3-9.
Rachel Gallup (Fredericksburg, VA/Courtland HS) was the lone Lady Indian to reach double figures in kills with a dozen. Erin Morant (Bealeton, VA/Liberty HS) collected seven kills with five blocks and Ashley Brown (Hendersonville, NC/N. Henderson HS) added six kills and four blocks. Setter Kaytee Frabotta (Sterling Heights, MI/Henry Ford II HS) had 36 assists with 12 digs.
Catawba rolled early in the opening set, bolting to a 13-4 lead. Gallup had three kills in Catawba’s first seven points. Lenoir-Rhyne came out of a timeout with a 10-1 run to pull within 14-13 after consecutive kills from Haley Rhyne (Statesville, NC). The Bears eventually took the lead at 16-15 on an ace from Briana Gottberg (Mooresville, NC) and never trailed the rest of the set.
The Lady Indians had another fast start in set two. Bri Howard (Graham, NC/S. Alamance HS) had a pair of kills and a block for an early 5-1 edge. Later, a kill and an ace from McKenzie Garrison (Newton, NC/Maiden HS) stretched the lead to 17-7. Gallup would kill off the set.
A block and kill from Alex Hopper (Madison, NC/McMichael HS) had Catawba up 8-4 in the third set, but L-R rallied. Kayla Morrow (China Grove, NC) served two aces in a five-point run that put the Bears up 11-9. A Brown kill had Catawba within 12-11 then the Bears went on a 7-1 run that was capped by a Morgan Bunker (Mount Airy, NC) kill. Down 22-14, Catawba closed the gap to 24-20 before Ashley Wells (Lovington, VA) killed off the set point.
The teams battled tightly through the mid-point of the fourth set. Lenoir-Rhyne led 15-14 when kills from Morrow and Gottberg helped the Bears to an 18-14 edge. A block and kill from Wells upped the lead to 22-15. Catawba again got within 24-20 before a service error ended the match.
Rhyne paced the Bears with a match-high 20 kills and added 10 digs and a pair of blocks. Bunker reached 10 kills to go along with four aces and 12 digs. Gottberg handed out 46 assists with Brittany Toffan (Horseheads, NY) recording four blocks.
Catawba hosts Brevard on Saturday at 5 p.m.
