Lanier and Morant Post Career Kill Numbers in Loss to Brevard

SALISBURY, NC -- Brevard held off a valiant Catawba rally to post a five-set win in South Atlantic Conference volleyball action on Saturday afternoon at Goodman Gym.  The Tornados won by the scores of 25-23 , 25-22, 17-25, 14-25 and 15-10 to improve to 5-12 overall and 2-11 in the SAC.  The Catawba Indians fall to 3-12 and 3-10.

Catawba got career-high kill number from Haley Lanier (Burgaw, NC/Pender Co. HS) and Erin Morant (Bealeton, VA/Liberty HS) in the loss.  Lanier posted a match-high 16 kills, while Morant followed with 15 kills and added three blocks and three aces.  Ashley Brown (Hendersonville, NC/N. Henderson HS) registered five blocks with Savannah Tomlinson (Remsenburg, NY/Westhampton Beach HS/UNCG) recording six kills and four blocks.

Brevard jumped to a two set lead, pulling away late to take the opening set and rallying from an 18-15 deficit in set two.  The first set was tied 10 times before a three-point run gave the Tornados an 18-15 lead they would hold the rest of the set.  Down by three at 18-15 late in the second set, a 6-1 run gave Brevard the margin it needed.

Catawba responded in the next two sets to even the match.  Consecutive kills from Morant put the Lady Indians up 14-7 in the third set.  Brevard closed within 19-15, but Tomlinson had a block and kill for a 22-15 edge.  McKenzie Garrison (Newton, NC/Maiden HS) posted back-to-back kills to get Catawba to set point and Morant killed it off.  Brevard scored the first four points of set four then the Lady Indians responded with a 14-3 run.  Lanier had three kills in the run and Morant served consecutive aces.

Lanier came up big for Catawba in the early stages of the fifth set.  She killed off three straight Catawba points to help the Lady Indians to a 7-4 edge.  Brevard rallied back.  Kills from Joy Oswalt and Fatima Gharachorloo and an ace from Bailey Hayes tied the set.  After two Catawba errors, another kill from Gharachorloo made it 10-7 Tornados.  Oswalt added two kills from there and Kayla Hanus served an ace on match point.

Oswalt led Brevard with 13 kills.  Gharachorloo and Erin Rollins each tallied a dozen kills.  Hanus handed out 47 assists, served two aces and collected 17 digs.  Libero Aleksandra Vrvilo recorded 22 digs.

Catawba setter Kaytee Frabotta (Sterling Heights, MI/Henry Ford II HS) had 49 assists, 10 digs, three blocks and a pair of aces.  Libero Leah Ryan (Westborough, MA/Westborough HS) had 25 digs.

Catawba will be on the road next weekend as the Lady Indians travel to Wingate on Friday night for a 7 p.m. match then to Coker on Saturday afternoon at 2 p.m.
