10th-Ranked Wingate Too Tough as Volleyball Falls in Three Sets
WINGATAE, NC -- The 10th-ranked Wingate Bulldogs swept past visiting Catawba in South Atlantic Conference volleyball action on Friday night at Cuddy Arena. The Bulldogs won by the scores of 25-14, 25-16 and 25-18 to improve to 19-2 overall and 15-0 in the SAC. The Catawba Indians fall to 3-13 and 3-11.
Alex Hopper (Madison, NC/McMichael HS) led Catawba with five kills, while Erin Morant (Bealeton, VA/Liberty HS) added four kills, three blocks and served an ace. Libero Leah Ryan (Westborough, MA/Westborough HS) recorded 10 digs and setter Kaytee Frabotta (Sterling Heights, MI/Henry Ford II HS) delivered 18 assists and served an ace.
Four Bulldogs shared top honors with eight kills; Anna Hilton, Lexi Potter, Shelly Stumpff and Abby Saehler. Potter added a pair of blocks, while Stumpff served a couple of aces. Allison Rickher registered three blocks and libero Stephanie Tassone posted 10 digs.
Wingate never trailed in the opening set and began to pull away after consecutive kills from Hilton made it 13-8. A kill from Stumpff upped the margin to 19-11. Susie Murach had back-to-back kills late and Hilton killed off the final point of the set.
Catawba grabbed a 6-3 lead in set two after an ace from Morant, but the Bulldogs reeled off seven of the next eight points to lead 10-7. Bri Howard (Graham, NC/S. Alamance HS) kept the Lady Indians close with a pair of kills, the last making it 15-13. Wingate ran off the next five points and went to finish off the set on a kill from Potter.
Ashley Brown (Hendersonville, NC/N. Henderson HS) had a pair of early kills to again push Catawba out to a 6-3 lead in set three. A combo block from Morant and Haley Lanier (Burgaw, NC/Pender Co. HS) along with some Wingate errors pushed the Lady Indian lead to 10-5. Wingate stormed back to go up 11-10 on an ace by Stumpff.
The Lady Indians stayed close and were down 16-15 after an ace from Frabotta. Saehler had an ace in a run from Wingate to put the Bulldogs up 20-15. Hopper closed the gap to 21-18 on a kill, but the final four points came from the Bulldogs, including the final point on a kill from Stumpff.
