Volleyball Gets Back Into Win Column With Sweep at Coker

HARTSVILLE, NC -- Catawba snapped a four-match losing streak with a sweep of host Coker in South Atlantic Conference volleyball action on Saturday afternoon at Timberlake-Lawton Gym.  The Catawba Indians improve to 4-13 overall and 4-11 in the SAC with the 25-8, 25-16 and 25-17 win.  The Cobras fall to 3-20 and 0-15.

Haley Lanier (Burgaw, NC/Pender Co. HS) recorded a team-high seven kills, while Bri Howard (Graham, NC/S. Alamance HS) added five kills and four blocks to pace the Lady Indians.  Catawba had a big serving day with 11 aces, four coming from libero Leah Ryan (Westborough, MA/Westborough HS), who also added a dozen digs, and three from setter Kaytee Frabotta (Sterling Heights, MI/Henry Ford II HS), who added 23 assists and four kills.

Catawba scored the first four points to open the match, capped on an ace from Taylor Houser (Mt. Holly, NC/S.Point HS/Pfeiffer).  An ace from McKenzie Garrison (Newton, NC/Maiden HS) upped the lead to 13-4.  An ace from Frabotta and a kill from Lanier helped build the lead to 22-7 and Howard would kill off the set point.

Alex Hopper (Madison, NC/McMichael HS) had a pair of kills and Ryan two aces to give Catawba a 6-1 lead in set two.  Leading 14-10, Catawba surged ahead with a run that put the Lady Indians up 21-12 after a kill from Howard.  Lanier got Catawba to set point with a kill and a Coker error ended it.

Coker led 2-0 in set three, but after two kills from Lanier and an ace from Garrison Catawba was up 6-2.  It was 15-11 before a kill from Emily Richardson (Salem, VA/Salem HS) and two aces from Frabotta stretched the margin to 18-11.  Anna Logan (Yadkiknville, NC/Mt Tabor HS) killed off the final two Catawba points to end the match.

Hannah Vadakin talled six kills to lead Coker.  She also had a block and a pair of aces.  Taylor Willis had four kills and Mindy Morris nine digs.  Setter Samantha Celek had 20 assists and four digs.

Catawba returns to home for matches next weekend.  Tusculum is Friday’s oppenent for a 7 p.m. match.
