BREVARD, NC -- Catawba got 146 yards rushing from Cary Littlejohn (Columbus, NC/Polk Co. HS) and three touchdowns from Danny O’Brien (Kernersville, NC/E. Forsyth HS/Wisconsin) in a 34-17 win over host Brevard in South Atlantic Conference football action on Saturday afternoon at Brevard Memorial Stadium. The Catawba Indians end a three-game skid and improve to 4-4 overall and 2-3 in the SAC.  The Tornados fall to 2-6 and 1-4.

Littlejohn became the first back to go over the 100-yard plateau this season in the freshman’s career-high performance.  He also caught five passes for 41 yards.  O’Brien threw for two scores and ran for another in the win.  Through the air, he completed 28 of 40 passes for 292 yards.

Neither team scored in the opening quarter, although Catawba drove inside the Brevard red zone on its first possession, which ended on a fumble.  The Indians would march 82 yards for a score on their first possession of the second quarter.  Littlejohn converted a fourth-down run on the drive and O’Brien followed with passes of 22 and 12 yards to Carlos Tarrats (Jacksonville, FL/Raines HS) to put Catawba on top to stay.

The Catawba defense stopped Brevard on downs and O’Brien helped match the Indians on a 15-play drive to add another score.  Another fourth down conversion led to the score as O’Brien scrambled for 15 yards on a fourth-and-14 to the Brevard 15.  The senior capped the drive with another 12-yard touchdown pass, this one to Tyler Hamilton (Charlotte, NC/Vance HS).  The point-after was blocked leaving the score 13-0 in favor of Catawba.

Brevard got on the board late in the first half as Kelvin Jeter scored on a 31-yard run at the 2:10 mark of the quarter.  The Tornados held Catawba and had a chance to take the lead, but Catawba held Brevard to a 39-yard field goal by Ben Noboa at the end of the half.

Catawba scored on its first three possessions of the second half to put the game away.  Littlejohn capped a 15-play, 75-yard drive to open the second half with a two-yard run, giving the Indians a 20-10 edge.  That drive continued when Lorenzo Pooler (Fayetteville, NC/Byrd HS) converted a fourth-and-three with a four-yard run.  The Indians followed that with an 80-yard drive that ended on an 18-yard pass from O’Brien to Nate Charest (Charlotte, NC/Butler HS).

The final scoring drive came early in the fourth quarter.  Pooler caught a 22-yard pass from O’Brien to get the drive going and Littlejohn ripped off runs of 31 and 11 yards to the one.  O’Brien plowed over from there and it was 34-10 with 13 minutes remaining.

Brevard added one final touchdown as Jeter netted his second touchdown on a 15-yard run.  Littlejohn capped his day with 55 yards on four runs in the final minutes that took the ball inside the Tornado five where the Indians took a knee to end the contest.

Catawba ran 85 plays to just 48 for Brevard and outgained the Tornados 542-242.  Brevard ran for 202 yards with Jordan Ollis picking up 108 yards on 20 carries.  Jeter added 79 yards and the two scores on eight attempts.

Littlejohn averaged nearly eight yards a carry with his 146 yards on 19 carries.  Charest and Tarrats each had eight receptions for Catawba.  Jason Taylor (Bahama, NC/Northern HS) and Dennis McFatten (Ocala, FL/Lake Weir HS) each had eight tackles and a sack on defense.

Catawba will host Mars Hill at Shuford Stadium next Saturday at 1:30 p.m.
