Garrison Posts 11 Kills In Volleyball's Loss to Tusculum
SALISBURY, NC -- Tusculum claimed a three-set sweep over host Catawba in South Atlantic Conference volleyball action on Friday night at Goodman Gym. The Pioneers won by the scores of 25-20, 25-22 and 25-18 to improve to 18-5 overall and 11-5 in the SAC. The Catawba Indians fall to 4-14 and 4-12.
Tusculum got seven kills and six aces from Morgan Hasse (Kingston Springs, TN) along with nine kills from Kassie Voelker (Morristown, TN) in the win. Danae Stauffer (Orrville, OH) and Rachel Garnett (Cincinnati, OH) also had seven kills for the Pioneers. Caitlyn Dean (Fort Wayne, IN) posted 19 digs.
McKenzie Garrison (Newton, NC/Maiden HS) led Catawba with 11 kills and 11 digs. Emily Richardson (Salem, VA/Salem HS) added seven kills, while Erin Morant (Bealeton, VA/Liberty HS) had three blocks. Setter Kaytee Frabotta (Sterling Heights, MI/Henry Ford II HS) collected 27 assists and two aces.
Hasse served two aces at the opening of the match to help put Tusculum up 4-0. Catawba stayed close and cut the margin to 16-15 on a kill from Frabotta. The Pioneers then reeled off six of the next seven points to go up 22-16. Hasse had two kills in the run. The Lady Indians cut the gap to 23-20 late, but another kill from Hasse was followed by a hitting error to give the set to Tusculum.
Another ace by Hasse in set two had the Pioneers up 3-1. Catawba responded with a run the put the Lady Indians up 6-4 following an ace from Meredith Furr (Concord, NC/Cox Mill HS). The Lady Indians stayed on top at 9-7 after a solo block from Morant and at 13-10 after at Tusculum error. The Pioneers came out of a timeout with a five-point run and stayed up the rest of the set. An ace from Dean and two Catawba errors pushed the margin to 23-17. Catawba got within 24-22 before Voelker killed off the set.
Tusculum grabbed quick control of the third set, again behind Hasse. She had two aces and a kill with Voelker posting two kills for a 5-0 lead. Stauffer’s kill pushed the lead to 11-3. Hasse’s final ace made the score 18-8 and the Pioneers went on to take the set and match.
Catawba is back in action at home in Goodman Gym on Saturday as the Lady Indians host Mars Hill at 5 p.m.
