Volleyball Falls to Mars Hill in Three Sets
SALISBURY, NC -- Visiting Mars Hill swept Catawba in South Atlantic Conference volleyball action on Saturday afternoon at Goodman Gym. The Lions improved to 13-8 overall and 11-6 in the SAC, winning by the scores of 25-18, 25-22 and 25-19. The Catawba Indians fall to 4-15 and 4-13.
Mars Hill took control midway through the first set. A kill from Hannah Wilson Fletcher, NC) and an ace from Andie Russell (Charlotte, NC) helped the Lions to a 13-8 edge. Mars Hill later used a 5-1 run to go up 20-13. Victoria Kaiser (Osprey, FL) killed off set point.
Catawba trailed early at 7-3 in set before rallying back to pull even at 9-9 on a kill from McKenzie Garrison (Newton, NC/Maiden HS). The Lady Indians held a 15-14 lead following a kill from Kaytee Frabotta (Sterling Heights, MI/Henry Ford II HS), but Mars Hill reeled off five straight points to take the lead. MaryKate Griffin (Weaverville, NC) killed off three of those points.
Two kills from Haley Lanier (Burgaw, NC/Pender Co. HS) sandwiched around on from Garrison pulled Catawba within 23-21, but the Lions held on getting a kill from Marissa Wixson (Spring, TX) and a Catawba service error to take the set.
Catawba got off to the early lead in set three. A kill from Erin Morant (Bealeton, VA/Liberty HS) and an ace from Meredith Furr (Concord, NC/Cox Mill HS) had the Lady Indians up 6-4. A kill from Morant and two Lions errors stretched the lead to 11-7. Mars Hill turned the match around from there. The Lions scored six straight points, capped by a combo block from Wixson and Regan Macomson (West Henderson, NC) to lead 13-11.
Kills from Wixson and Griffin helped Mars Hill go up 19-14. Catawba put together a rally on two kills from Lanier and one from Morant to close the gap to 20-19. That would be the final points for the Lady Indians as Mars Hill scored the final five points, ending the match on a block by Griffin and Macomson.
Wixson tallied a match-high 16 kills to pace Mars Hill. Griffin added 13 kills and a pair of blocks. Russell served three aces and handed out 14 assists, while Maggie Murphy (Richmond, VA) collecte4d 15 digs.
Garrison reached double-figures in kills for Catawba with 10. Morant picked up nine kills and a pair of blocks. Lanier followed with eight kills. Frabotta handed out 33 assists with three blocks and nine digs, while libero Leah Ryan (Westborough, MA/Westborough HS) had 11 digs.
17. Catawba got within 24-22 before Voelker killed off the set.
Catawba hosts two more home matches next weekend as the Lady Indians play Carson-Newman on Friday night at 7 p.m. and Lincoln Memorial on Saturday afternoon at 2 p.m.
