Volleyball Drops Four-Set Match to Carson-Newman
SALISBURY, NC -- Carson-Newman rallied from a set down to grab a four-set win over host Catawba in South Atlantic Conference volleyball action on Friday night at Goodman Gym. The Eagles improve to 11-14 overall and 6-12 in the SAC with the 18-25, 25-16, 25-16 and 25-20 victory. The Catawba Indians fall to 4-16 and 4-14.
Rachel Harper Chattanooga, TN) led Carson-Newman with 16 kills, 16 digs three aces and a pair of blocks. Emily Schultz (Atlanta, GA) added 15 kills, while Lauren Santarelli (Colorado Springs, CO) added 11 more. Kiayna O’Neal (Katy, TX) posted three blocks and libero Taylor Lowe (Franklin, TN) recorded 17 digs. Setter Kristen Pickett (Cleveland, TN) handed out 48 assists.
Freshman McKenzie Garrison (Newton, NC/Maiden HS) led the Lady Indians with a dozen kills, 10 digs and three blocks. Alex Hopper (Madison, NC/McMichael HS) added nine kills and Bri Howard (Graham, NC/S. Alamance HS) followed with eight kills and a pair of blocks. Erin Morant (Bealeton, VA/Liberty HS) posted four blocks, Taylor Houser (Mt. Holly, NC/S. Point HS/Pfeiffer ) had 13 digs and Kaytee Frabotta (Sterling Heights, MI/Henry Ford II HS) delivered 36 assists with 11 digs.
Catawba was able to grab the early lead as it pulled away midway through the first set. After a kill from Garrison she combined with Morant for a block and a 12-10 lead. Morant and Howard blocked for a point and Howard delivered a kill to up the margin to 14-10. Following back-to-back kills from Morant it was 17-11. C-N rallied back and cut the margin to 21-18, but a kill from Howard and two from Emily Richardson (Salem, VA/Salem HS) to close out the set.
Harper had a kill and a block to put the Eagles up 3-0 in set two and they never trailed. Kills from Harper and Schultz made it 13-7. Leading 18-14, Harper had two kills and Schultz another to help push the margin to 22-15. Santarelli had a kill and combo block with O’Neal to end the set.
The teams went back and forth early in set three before a nine-point run by Carson-Newman put the visitors up 16-8. Harper served two aces and had two kills in the run. Catawba could never cut into the margin.
Three kills and a block from Anna Logan (Yadkinville, NC/Mt. Tabor HS) in a 4-1 Catawba run had the Lady Indians up 11-9 in set four. Harper pulled the Eagles even at 13-13 on an ace and the teams traded points until it was 20-20. C-N wrapped up the match for there, scoring the final five points. Schultz had three kills and O’Neal an ace in the run.
Catawba next hosts Lincoln Memorial on Saturday afternoon at 2 p.m.
