Volleyball Falls to Lincoln Memorial in Four Sets
SALISBURY, NC -- Lincoln Memorial grabbed a four-set win over host Catawba in South Atlantic Conference volleyball action on Saturday afternoon at Goodman Gym. The Lady Railsplitters won by the scores of 25-23, 16-25, 25-15 and 25-14 to improve to 16-11 overall and 12-7 in the SAC. The Catawba Indians fall to 4-17 and 4-15.
Kaitlin Walton (Muncie, IN) collected 15 kills with three blocks and four aces to lead Lincoln Memorial. Kendra Gephart (Morrow, OH) and Jazzy Oates (Franklin, TN) each added 11 kills. Libero Casey Mense (Murfreesboro, TN) picked up 18 digs and setter Abby Cash (New Carlisle, IN) handed out 29 assists.
McKenzie Garrison (Newton, NC/Maiden HS) led the Lady Indians nine kills and 10 digs. Haley Lanier (Burgaw, NC/Pender Co. HS) followed with eight kills and Bri Howard (Graham, NC/S. Alamance HS) tallied eight kills and three blocks. Libero Taylor Houser (Mt. Holly, NC/S. Point HS/Pfeiffer) recorded 11 digs and setter Kaytee Frabotta (Sterling Heights, MI/Henry Ford II HS) had 32 assists, three aces and 10 digs.
Catawba trailed by three late in the opening set, but won three straight points to pull even at 23-23. After a Catawba error, Gephart killed off the final point for LMU. Consecutive aces from Frabotta got Catawba going in set two with a 10-5 lead. LMU closed within 15-12, but the Lady Indians ran off seven straight points which included two kills from Lanier and an ace from Houser. Two kills from Lanier got Catawba to set point which came on a LMU error.
The Lady Railsplitters took control early in the third set. A 9-1 run put LMU up 11-5 after an ace from Walton. Up 13-9, Walton had two kills and Mense an ace to help push the margin to 18-10. A Brooke Fleeman (Nashville, TN) kill ended the set.
It was another quick start for LMU in the final set. A 13-2 run gave the visitors a 16-5 edge. Walton had two early aces in the run, while Gephart added four kills. LMU continued to pull away and ended the match on a combo block from Walton and Oates.
Catawba will close out its home schedule on Tuesday as the Lady Indians host Queens at 7 p.m.
