Last-Second Field Goal Lifts Football Over North Greenville 20-17

TIGERVILLE, SC -- Chad Hollandsworth (Kernersville, NC/E. Forsyth HS) kicked a 23-yard field goal as time expired to lift Catawba to a come-from-behind 20-17 victory over host North Greenville in football action on Saturday afternoon at Younts Stadium.  The win improves the Catawba Indians to 6-4 and assures them of a winning season for the first time since 2010.  The Crusaders fall to 5-5.

Catawba back-up quarterback Mike Sheehan (Wilmington, NC/Laney HS) guided the Indians from its own 18 in the final 1:14 to set up the winning kick.  Sheehan was three-of-four on the drive for 53 yards and ran for another 23.  His final completion went to Tyler Hamilton (Charlotte, NC/Vance HS) for 22 yards to the NGU seven.  After a timeout with six seconds left, Hollandsworth was true on his kick to give Catawba the win.

Sheehan went four-of-five passing for 71 yards after entering for an injured Danny O’Brien (Kernersville, NC/E. Forsyth HS/Wisconsin) and also ran for another 40.  O’Brien threw for 130 yards on 17-of-25 passing before exiting early in the fourth quarter.  Nate Charset (Charlotte, NC/Butler HS) had eight catches for 101 yards, while Cary Littlejohn (Columbus, NC/Polk Co. HS) ran for 90 yards on 17 carries.

The Indians had rallied from a 17-3 halftime deficit.  Montravius Evans (Barnsville, GA/Lamar Co. HS) sparked to comeback with a 38-yard interception return for a score late in the third quarter.  Evans had also ended a Crusader driver earlier in the third quarter when he forced a fumble after NGU had driven to the Indian 19.

After Evans cut the margin to 17-10, the Indian defense forced a punt and Catawba went 80-yard for the tying score with 11:01 to play.  O’Brien helped set up the score with a 43-yard pass to Charest on a third-and-17 play to the NGU 33.  Sheehan converted another third down with a 13-yard run to the one.  That set up a Littlejohn run to pull Catawba even.

The Crusaders looked to be set to regain the lead as they marched to the Catawba four with a first-and-goal.  The defense stiffened and NGU elected to go for it on fourth down at the one, but Nelson Hughes was denied.  The teams traded punts and Catawba started its winning drive with 1:14 on the clock.

Sheehan ran for 10 yards and completed a 17-yard pass to Carlos Tarrats (Jacksonville, FL/Raines HS) up to the Catawba 45.  Sheehan added a 13 yard run and a 14-yard pass to Charest to the NGU 28.  Hamilton followed with his grab inside the 10 to bring on Hollandsworth to end the game.

North Greenville took the lead when it scored off the opening kickoff.  Hughes tossed a 16-yard pass to Freddie Marino for the score.  After the teams traded field goals, the Crusaders added a touchdown right before the half on a two-yard run by Trey Walker.  That would be the final points on the day for NGU.

Walker ran for 134 yards to pace the North Greenville ground attack.  Hughes went 25-of-34 through the air for 220 yards.  Marino had 14 receptions for 130 yards.

Jason Taylor (Bahama, NC/Northern HS) had another solid day on defense for Catawba.  He had 10 tackles and was in on the goal line stand in the final quarter.  He also forced a fumble.  Evans was the other big story with his pick-six, forced fumble and four tackles.

Catawba closes out its season on Saturday as the Indians host Lenoir-Rhyne at 1:30 p.m.
