Warren Has Huge Day in Men's Basketball's Loss to Pfeiffer
SALISBURY, NC -- Visiting Pfeiffer overcame a 12-point second-half deficit to claim a 90-86 win over Catawba in men's basketball action on Sunday afternoon at Goodman Gym in the Salisbury Roundball Classic. The Falcons improve to 1-1, while the Catawba Indians fall to 0-2.
Pfeiffer got 28 points from Mike Smith and 25 points from AJ Clark in the win. Armin Omanovic followed with 17 points with David McNair grabbing 10 rebounds. Catawba got a monster game from freshman Troy Warren (Mooresville, NC/Lake Norman HS), who posted a double-double with 26 points and 15 rebounds while blocking seven shots. Elon Edwards (Greenville, NC/Rose HS) added 17 points and Chris Watson (Reidsville, NC/Reidsville HS/Rockingham CC) 10 points.
The Falcons benefited from 21 Catawba turnovers and held a 52-43 edge on the boards. Pfeiffer also cashed in better at the line, making 19-of-29 (65%) to just 10-of-22 (46%) for the Indians.
A late run in the first half by Catawba erased a seven-point deficit and had the Indians up 50-48 after Nick Houston's (China Grove, NC/Carson HS) three-pointer with 28 seconds left. Catawba connected on 51% of its shots in the opening half to just 33% for the Falcons, although Pfeiffer took 16 more shots due to 18 offensive rebounds.
Edwards hit back-to-back three's to help Catawba run out to a 60-48 lead in the opening minutes of the second half. Pfeiffer tied the game at 67-all with just over 10 minutes left on a jumper by Andrew Guerrero. The Falcons went on top on a three-pointer from Charlie Wagoner at 73-72, but Warren answered to put the Indians back up.
Jalen Byrd (Hickory, NC/Hickory HS) canned a three-pointer to give Catawba a 79-76 edge with 5:29 remaining, but the Falcons scored 10 straight points, going on top at 81-79 on the three-pointer from Clark. The Indians were down 88-82 with 2:42 remaining then got within two after baskets by Watson and Warren with 42 seconds left. Smith sealed it for Pfeiffer on a layup with 11 seconds to play for the final points.
Catawba will play again at Goodman Gym on Monday night as the Indians host Belmont Abbey at 7 p.m.
