Baseball falls on wild pitch in 12th inning

LAURINBURG, NC Jason Catlin scored on a wild pitch with two outs in the bottom of the 12th inning as St. Andrews defeated visiting Catawba 6-5 in baseball action at Knights Field on Wednesday afternoon. St. Andrews improves to 4-6, while Catawba falls to 4-2. Tribe freshman reliever Nick Mayle (Landis, NC) began the 12th inning on the mound and after an error, induced Casey Clary to ground into a double play. With two outs, Caitlin reached on a two-base error, went to third on a passed ball and scored on the wild pitch on a 2-1 count. Catawba jumped out to a quick lead. Blair Reynolds (King, NC) led off with a double and scored on a single by Scott Searles (Boston, MA). Later in the inning, Jimbo Davis (Salibury, NC) doubled home a run, then scored on a single by Matt Baker (Charlotte, NC). Catlin would breing the Knights within a run in their first with a two-run homer. David homered in the fourth to give the Tribe a 4-2 lead. St. Andrews would draw even in the sixth as Catlin singled home a run and another scored on a double play groundout. The Knights grabbed the lead in the seventh on a squeeze bunt by Trent Sheppard that plated John Rhodes. Aaron Rimer would deliver a one-out, run-scoring double in the eighth for Catawba that sent the game to extra frames. Davis led the way for Catawba, which rapped out 14 hits to just five for St. Andrews. The freshman went 3-for-6 with a pair of RBI and scored two runs. Baker also collected three hits, while Searles, Rimer and Chad Hill (Bennett, NC). Matt Fairweather (Lenoir, NC) made the start for Catawba and allowed three runs on just two hits over five innings. Spencer Anthony (Charlotte, NC) tossed four and a third innings of relief, allowing just one hit and recording two strikeouts. #####
