Richardson Posts Six Blocks as Volleyball Falls to Queens
SALISBURY, NC -- Queens rallied after dropping the opening set to top host Catawba in four sets on Tuesday night in South Atlantic Conference volleyball action at Goodman Gym. The Royals improve to 14-10 overall and 12-8 in the SAC, winning by the scores of 18-25, 25-23, 25-16 and 25-18. The Catawba Indians, who played inspired on senior night, fell to 4-18 and 4-16.
Anna Gibbs (Hickory, NC) had a huge night for Queens, hitting at 56% as she delivered 23 kills with just one hitting error. Keri Kemp (Lake Mary, FL) followed with 16 kills, while Brittney Barren (Ham Lake, MN) added a dozen kills and Elizabeth Bialkowski (Raleigh, NC) chipped in with 10. Erin Mooney (Bradenton, FL) served three aces.
Freshman McKenzie Garrison (Newton, NC/Maiden HS) had a match-high 10 kills for the Lady Indians. Bri Howard (Graham, NC/S. Alamance HS) added nine kills and five blocks. Senior Emily Richardson (Salem, VA/Salem HS) had five kills and six blocks and senior Anna Logan (Yadkinville, NC/Mt. Tabor HS) posted four kills and four blocks.
Catawba turned around a deficit early in the opening set with a six-point run to lead 11-7. Erin Morant (Bealeton, VA/Liberty HS) had an ace in the run with Richardson adding a block and a kill. The Lady Indians moved out to a 19-13 lead after a kill from Logan. Queens got within 23-18, but a combo block from Richardson and Logan ended the set.
Mooney got Queens out to a quick start in set two as it led 8-4 after her three straight aces. The Royals were up 20-15 after a kill from Megan Mancini (Dearborn, MI), but Catawba rallied. The Lady Indians scored four straight points and would tie the set at 21-21. Garrison kept it tied with a kill at 22-22. Queens got two kills from Gibbs before Haley Lanier’s (Burgaw, NC/Pender Co. HS) kill closed it to 24-23. Gibbs then got the kill for the set.
Kemp had three kills to help the Royals take a 10-4 lead in set three. A kill from Gibbs made it 16-9. Kemp finished off a big set with consecutive kills.
Ashley Brown (Hendersonville, NC/N. Henderson HS) had three blocks and Howard four kills to get Catawba out to a 9-3 lead in set four. Queens clawed back, cutting the margin to 13-10 on a kill from Barren. Gibbs had to kills to close within 15-13 and an ace from Taylor Riley (Lynchburg, VA) tied the set at 15-all. Bialkowski had two kills and a block to push Queens to a 19-16 lead and Barren had two consecutive kills to end the match.
Catawba hits the road for the final weekend of the season. The Lady Indians face Newberry on Friday at 7 p.m. and Anderson on Saturday at 2 p.m.
