Bully's Career-High 30 Points Helps Pace Women's Basketball to Win in Opener
MISENHEIMER, NC -- Catawba had a successful start to the 2013-14 season, posting an 82-73 win over host Pfeiffer in women's basketball action on Tuesday night at Merner Gym. Chloe Bully (Hannut, BELGIUM/KOL Landen HS) led the Catawba Indians, scoring a career-high 30 points. The Falcons fall to 0-2.
Catawba trailed 36-34 at the break, but Bully pumped in 24 of her points in the final half to help rally the Lady Indians. The junior was just 1-for-5 in the opening half, but canned 7-of-10 shots in the second half, including five three-pointers. Mallary Clay (Lansing, NC/Ashe Co. HS) followed with 13 points, while Emma Ucinski (Atlanta, GA/St. Pius X HS) scored a dozen and handed out four assists.
Freshman Jada Huntley (Indian Trail, NC/Porter Ridge HS) hit a three-pointer to give Catawba the lead to start the second half and Bully made it 42-38 after two free throws and a three-pointer. Tied at 44-all, Bully had two three-pointers and three free throws in a run that saw the Lady Indians take a 55-47 edge with 12:32 left.
Clay connected on a three-pointer to give Catawba a double-digit lead at 71-60 with just under six minutes to play. Catawba clinched the game when Bully sank a three-pointer and Clay scored on a layup with 2:48 to go for an 80-69 lead.
The teams played an even first half, but Catawba used a big night on the offensive glass, out-rebounding Pfeiffer 16-6 and scoring 15 second-chance points to five for the Falcons. The Lady Indians also had a 25-11 scoring edge in points off turnovers.
Pfeiffer shot 52% (24-of-46) to Catawba's 38% (23-of-60), but had six more turnovers and lost the rebounding battle by six. Carter Williams led the Falcons with 21 points and nine rebounds. Carlisha Holivay added 16 points.
Catawba stays on the road this weekend, traveling on Sunday to Fayetteville State for a 2 p.m. tip-off.
