Howard Leads Volleyball in Loss at Newberry
NEWBERRY, SC -- Catawba was swept by host Newberry in South Atlantic Conference volleyball action on Friday night at Eleazer Arena. The Wolves won by the scores of 25-16, 25-19 and 25-19 to improve to 18-10 overall and 12-9 in the SAC. The Catawba Indians fall to 4-19 and 4-17.
Bri Howard (Burlington, NC/S. Alamance HS) led Catawba with eight kills and added a pair of blocks. McKenzie Garrison (Newton, NC/Maiden HS) followed with six kills and collected five digs. Libero Taylor Houser (Mt. Holly, NC/S. Point HS/Pfeiffer) served two aces and recorded nine digs.
A pair of kills from Alexus Horton and an ace from Elayni Stokes helped push Newberry to a 13-9 lead in the opening set. Catawba rallied behind kills from Howard and Haley Lanier (Burgaw,NC/Pender Co. HS) and pulled within 14-13 when the duo combined on a block. The Wolves then ran off five straight points, including consecutive aces from Jessica King, and went on to win the set.
Trailing 3-2 early in set two, a pair of kills from King sparked a 6-0 run by the Wolves. A 4-0 spurt later in the set made it 15-7. Catawba tried to make a late run from a 22-13 deficit as a kill from Abby Pennington (Blacksburg, VA/Blacksburg HS) cut the deficit to 24-19, but Samantha Parrish killed off the set point for the Wolves.
Newberry led early in set three, but Audrey Hoffman had a block and a kill in a run that saw Catawba turn a 9-8 deficit into a 12-9 lead. The Wolves came right back with five straight points and went up 20-16 after a kill and block from Amanda Soper then 24-18 following a kill from Horton.
Horton recorded 10 kills with three blocks to pace the Wolves. Logan Hayward followed with eight kills and Soper collected seven kills and a pair of blocks. Newberry hit 36% for the match, while the Lady Indians hit at 12%.
Catawba will conclude its season tomorrow afternoon when the Lady Indians travel to Anderson for a 2 p.m. match.
