Charest Sets Receiving Mark in Season Ending Loss to #14 Lenoir-Rhyne
SALISBURY, NC -- Lenoir-Rhyne, ranked 14th in NCAA II, ran up 503 total yards in taking a 48-15 victory of host Catawba in South Atlantic Conference football action on Saturday afternoon at Shuford Stadium and Kirkland Field. The Bears improve to 10-1 overall and 7-0 in the SAC, while the Catawba Indians finish up their season at 6-5 and 3-4.
The Bears ran for 445 yards, completing just one pass, which went for a 58-yard score in the fourth quarter. Isaiah Whitaker led a balanced Lenoir-Rhyne ground attack with 84 yards. Graham Duncan added 73 yards and scored a pair of touchdowns. Teverrius Jones ran for one score and threw for another.
Catawba's Mike Sheehan (Wilmington, NC/Laney HS), subbing for an injured Danny O'Brien (Kernersville, NC/E. Forsyth HS/Wisconsin), completed 11-of-21 passes for 175 yards and a touchdown. He also ran for 61 yards. Carlos Tarrats (Jacksonville, FL/Raines HS) caught a 74-yard touchdown pass and ran for a score.
The Bears took the lead for good as they marched 77-yards in 11 plays with the opening kickoff. Jones capped the drive with a six-yard run. Catawba struck back quickly as Sheehan completed the long scoring pass to Tarrats, but the point-after was missed leaving the Bears on top 7-6. Lenoir-Rhyne went on another long drive with the ensuing kickoff. Michael Patrick capped the 13-play, 75-yard drive with a five-yard run.
Lenoir-Rhyne tacked on two Zach Neumann field goals before Catawba closed the half on a field goal from Chad Hollandsworth (Kernersville, NC/E. Forsyth HS) leaving the score at 20-9 in favor of the Bears at the break. Stephen Amosh jump-started the Bears in the third quarter. After Lenoir-Rhyne missed a field goal, Amosh intercepted Sheehan on the first play. Duncan scored from 10-yards out for a 27-9 edge then added another 10-yard scoring run on the next Bears possession.
Jones made it 41-9 when he completed his only pass of the game to Greyson Wells for the 58-yard score early in the fourth quarter. Tarrats got the Indians back on the scoreboard, scoring on an eight-yard run on a reverse. Josh Justice capped the scoring with a five-yard for the Bears.
Nate Charest (Charlotte, NC/Butler HS) caught four passes for Catawba and in the process set a new school record for receptions in a season with 73. He broke the old mark of 70 catches by Corey Ready in 2003. The senior finished third on the all-time receiving list with 184 receptions. Ready had 190 in his career with Nick Means catching 185 balls.
Three Indians posted double-digits in tackles. Jason Taylor (Bahama, NC/Northern HS) and Jacob Hanes (Charlotte, NC/Butler HS) each made 13 stops with LJ McCray (Charlotte, NC/Harding HS) adding a dozen. Hanes and Stephen Davis (Mascotte, FL/S. Sumter HS) posted sacks.
