Howard Posts a Dozen Kills as Volleyball Drops Season Finale at Anderson
ANDERSON, SC -- Anderson recorded a three-set sweep of visiting Catawba in South Atlantic Conference volleyball action on Saturday afternoon at the Abney Center. The Trojans improve to 15-13 overall and 14-8 in the SAC with the 25-15, 25-21 and 25-15 win. The Catawba Indians end their season at 4-20 and 4-18.
Bri Howard (Burlington, NC/S. Alamance HS) led Catawba for the second straight match, collecting 12 digs on the afternoon. Emily Richardson (Salem, VA/Salem HS) followed with five kills and registered a solo block. Libero Taylor Houser (Mt. Holly, NC/S. Point HS/Pfeiffer) recorded 11 digs.
Anderson pulled away from a 6-6 tie in the opening set, going on a 15-3 run. Tinsley Hallman produced three consecutive kills to push the score to 24-13 and Shannon Gillespie killed off set point.
Alix Hooker had two kills, while Hallman added a kill and an ace to give Anderson a 6-1 lead in the second set. Howard had a kill to cut the margin to 14-9, but the Trojans scored three straight, capped by a kill from Gillespie to lead 18-10. It was 23-13 before the Lady Indians reeled off six straight points. Howard had consecutive kills to make it 24-21, but an attack error by Catawba ended the set.
Anderson rolled early in set three, again leading 6-1. Meghan Cautero served back-to-back aces to make it 11-4 and Priscilla Irizarry had two kills in a run that pushed the lead to 16-6. It would be Irizarry that killed off the final point.
Gillespie led Anderson with 14 kills. Hailey Pittman added 10 kills and a pair of blocks. Cautero served a pair of aces and handed out 33 assists, while Hooker posted 19 digs.
