Men's Basketball upended at Tusculum
GREENEVILLE, TN -- Pat Compton led six players in double figures with 15 points as Tusculum defeated visiting Catawba College 81-71 in menís basketball action on Wednesday night at Alpine Arena. Tusculum improves to 13-9 overall and 4-5 in the SAC, while the Indians fall to 7-15 and 2-7.
Also tallying in double-digits offensively were Brad Hawks (Galax, VA) and Jonathon Shepherd (Casino, AUSTRALIA) with 13 points each, Cliff Charles (Newark, NJ) added 14 points and four assists off the bench, while Bobby Ewing (Owensboro, KY) and Donald Sexton (Oneida, TN) accounted for 10 points apiece. Catawba was paced by Brian Carter's (Alexandria, VA) 18-point effort, while Helgi Magnusson (Reykjavik, ICELAND) and Alex Luyk (Madrid, SPAIN) finished with 17 and 15 points, respectively.
The Pioneers finished the game shooting 51 percent from the floor, but came out cold missing their first five shots of the contest and trailed 11-6 five minutes into the game. Carter recorded a dunk while Luyk and Kevin Petty (Sanford, NC) recorded back-to-back 3-pointers in during the spurt. Tusculum followed that cold string making 13 of their next 17 shots to open up a 17-point lead before settling for a 45-32 lead at halftime.
In the second half, Catawba cut the deficit under 10 several times, but Tusculum managed to move ahead by 16 on a couple of occasions, including 70-54 with 4:57 left on the clock. The Indians wouldn't go away though as they went on a 10-0 run as Magnusson made a pair of treys and Luyk drained a jumper in the paint to trail by six (70-64) with three minutes remaining. But that's as close as the Tribe would get Shepherd and Compton made free throws heading down the stretch, including a three-point play by Shepherd to ice the game.
Tusculum out-rebounded the Indians by a 36-31 margin led by Hawks, Compton and Shepherd with six boards each. Luyk led Catawba on the boards with eight rebounds.
