Men Finish 7th, Women 8th at Wingate Fall Frenzy
CHARLOTTE, NC -- The Catawba College men’s swim team finished in seventh place while the women finished in eighth at the Wingate Fall Frenzy that concluded Sunday night. Wingate University hosted the three day event at the Mecklenburg County Aquatic Center. Twelve teams participated in the women’s division while eleven teams participated for the men.
The College of Charleston took the overall women’s group with 1,492 points. The Catawba Lady Indians finished with a score of 434.
On the men’s side, Queens University won the team total by just a three point margin over the College of Charleston. Queens finished with a 1443.5 score while Catawba totaled 451 points.
During the meet the Catawba women broke two school records in relay events. The first came on Saturday in the 800-yard freestyle relay with a time of 7:50.92. The time broke the previous record by over eight seconds. The team comprised of Katia Kruglov, Nadine Brockmann, Filippa Wallin and Anna Barnes to finish sixth in the meet event.
Brockmann, Kruglov, Barnes and Amy Cujas teamed up on Sunday to set a new school record in the 400-yard freestyle with a time of 3:35.04. The four took fifth place in the meet.
The Lady Indians finished the meet setting fourteen new top -10 times which included four relay events.
Brockmann was the first Lady Indian to reach an A-Final which came in the 200-yard freestyle. Brockman finished in fifth position with a time of 1:55.26. Kruglov would follow with an A-Final of her own in the 200-yard backstroke where she finished with a sixth place time of 2:06.51.
In men’s action, Dominic Brus broke the school record in the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 51.02. Brus’ record breaking swim also earned him the win in the event’s B-Final as well as making the NCAA-II B-cut. In the Fall Frenzy the Indian men recorded fifteen new top-10 times in the school’s history.
Jevgenij Gamper recorded the first A-Final swim for the men with a fourth place time of 1:53.90 in the 200 yard medley. On Saturday, Finn Furstenwerth swam his own A-Final in the 400 yard medley finishing in fifth. Gamper would return to the finals in the 100 yard breaststroke and finished in second place with a time of 56.46.
Both Gamper and Furstenwerth made the A-Final race in the 200 yard breaststroke. Gamper finished in third place with a time of 2:04.06. Furstenwerth took fifth place with a 2:06.12 time.
Catawba will return to action on January 18th to travel to Lenoir-Rhyne for a dual meet. The meet is scheduled for 1pm.
