Carson-Newman Stiffles Catawba in Second Half Run to Win 66-58
JEFFERSON CITY, TN – An 18-0 second half run proved costly for the Catawba Lady Indians as they fell to Carson Newman 66-58 in South Atlantic Conference women’s basketball action on Saturday afternoon. With the loss Catawba falls to 4-3 on the year and 3-1 in conference play. The Lady Eagles improved to 6-2 and 4-0, respectively.
In the first half the two teams entered the break separated by just one point despite Catawba shooting a dismal 23.5% from the floor. With 12:25 remaining in the game Catawba was able to pull out a ten point advantage standing at 43-33. Over the next five minutes Catawba shot 0-6 and committed four turnovers allowing Carson Newman to capitalize and retake the lead at 51-43.
The two teams would trade baskets for the remainder of the game. Each team held a ten point lead in the second half.
Mallary Clay led all Catawba scorers with 15. Chloe Bully and Emma Ucinski each added 11 of their own. Catawba rebounding was led by Antoinette McPhail with eight boards. Catawba finished the day shooting just thirty percent from the field including 7-for-33 from the three point line.
On the other side of the ball, The Lady Eagles fared much better shooting 37% from the field and 40% from behind the arc. Chante Markus led the charge tallying 16 points, five rebounds and six steals. Teammate Jassmine Franklin contributed 13 points and seven rebounds from the bench.
Catawba returns to Goodman Gym on Saturday, December 14th to host SAC opponent, Tusculum. Tip-off is scheduled for 2pm.
