JEFFERSON CITY, TN – Catawba College fell 62-60 to Carson Newman in South Atlantic Conference men’s basketball action on Saturday evening despite a late second half surge by Catawba to close a 13 point gap.  With the loss Catawba now stands at 1-6 on the season and 1-3 in conference play.  Carson Newman improves to 6-1 overall and 3-1 in the SAC.

Carson Newman drew first blood in the game on a basket by Carson Brooks.  Tyrece Little then made two free throws of his own for Catawba to tie the game back up a two apiece.  After a Josh Rogers basket to give Carson Newman the lead again the Eagles would never surrender the lead for the remainder of the game.

After going into the half down by ten Catawba would trade baskets with the Eagles for most of the second half.  With eight minutes left in the second half Carson Newman held a 13 point lead after a tip-in by Rogers.  Catawba responded going 4-5 from the three point line to bring the deficit down to just three with over six minutes still remaining.

Carson Newman proved to be too much by responding with five straight points to return the Eagle’s lead back to eight.

With 2:30 left in the game Catawba would score three straight behind baskets from Little, Reggie Perkins and Vismantas Marijosius to bring the score to 62-60 with 47 seconds left.  Defense prevailed for Catawba to stop the Eagles but a missed three point attempt by Perkins closed out the game.

Catawba finished the game shooting 33.8% from the field and out rebounded Carson Newman 46-34.  The Indians shot 6-for-24 from the three point line as well as 10-for-14 from the charity stripe.  Little and Kijuan Arrington each recorded double-doubles in the loss and each scored 15 points.  Little also grabbed 12 rebounds and Arrington tallied 11.

Carson Newman shot 43.3% in the win despite going 3-for-17 from behind the arc.  Rogers added 14 points and nine rebounds to the cause.

Catawba will return to the hardwood on December 14 as the Indians host SAC opponent, Tusculum at Goodman Gym.  Game time is listed for 4pm.
