Arrington's Big Second Half Helps Rally Men's Basketball Past Tusculum
SALISBURY, NC -- Catawba rallied to pull out a 93-89 overtime win over visiting Tusculum in South Atlantic Conference men's basketball action on Saturday afternoon night at Goodman Gym. Kijuan Arrington (Newport News, VA/Denbigh HS/Henry CC) scored 27 points to lead the Catawba Indians, who improve to 2-6 overall and 2-3 in the SAC. The Pioneers fall to 1-10 and 0-6.
Catawba never led in regulation, but a pair of free throws by Tyrece Little (Greenville, NC/Rose HS) 50 seconds into the extra period put the Indians up 78-76. The Pioneers got the lead back as Jalen Walker (White Sulphur Springs, WV) answered with a three-point play only to see the Indians reel off the next six points. Arrington had two free throws, Chance Rucker (Concord, NC/Concord HS/Benedict) a layup and Little a tip-in for an 84-79 lead with 2:28 to go.
Cory Fagan (Oak Ridge, TN) cut a six-point deficit in half with 1:06 remaining, but Arrington answered with a three-pointer of his own to make it 90-84 with 34 ticks left. Walker again made it a one-possession game on a three-pointer with 13 seconds remaining but Arrington made a free throw with nine seconds to play for the final margin.
Little had a double-double for Catawba with 12 points and 10 rebounds. He also blocked five shots, including two in overtime that led to quick layups. Rucker fired in 18 points with Elon Edwards (Greenville, NC/Rose HS) and Vismantas Marijosius (Kedainiai, LITHUANIA/North Hills) each added 10 points. Marijosius added nine rebounds and three blocks.
Walker collected 20 points and grabbed seven rebounds to lead the Pioneers. Matt Shown (Knoxville, TN) followed with 15 points and eight rebounds, while Darius Carter (Cascade, VA) tossed in 16. Addison Flynn (Fayetteville, GA) picked up 10 points in the loss.
An early 11-0 run put the Pioneers up 13-2 in the opening five minutes. When Shown canned a jumper at the 11:56 mark, Tusculum led 20-8. Catawba clawed back close and cut the margin to 20-18 after a dunk by Troy Warren (Mooresville, NC/Lake Norman HS) with 9:03 remaining in the half. The Pioneers responded and took their largest lead at 38-25 in the closing minutes of the half following a three-pointer by Warren.
Tusculum led 42-32 at the half and held a 65-58 edge with eight minutes to go when Marijosius sparked the Indians on a pair of three-pointers in a span of 52 seconds to put Catawba within 67-66 with 7:08 to go. Carter pushed the TC lead back to six at 76-70, but the Indians scored the final points of regulation to force extra time.
Marijosius sliced down the lane for a dunk to make it 76-72 with 3:04 to go and Rucker added a free throw with 2:24 remaining. A free throw by Little made it 76-74 with 1:47 left and after two missed free throws from Walker, Arrington tied it on a drive in the lane. The Indians had a chance to win at the buzzer, but Arrington's shot was off the mark.
Arrington scored 22 of his 28 points after the break and scored eight points in the overtime period. He canned 10-of-19 shots and made a trio of three-pointers. Catawba made 47.5% from the field and made 20-of-34 (58.5%) after halftime. Tusculum shot 42% and held a 49-40 edge on the glass, grabbing 24 on the offensive end.
Catawba plays its final game before the New Year at Limestone on Saturday at 4 p.m.
