Baseball done in by nine-run ninthSALISBURY, NC -- Catawba College surrendered nine runs in the top of the ninth inning and fell to visiting UNC-Pembroke 13-11 in baseball action at Newman Park on Thursday afternoon. Ty Rutledge’s (Wilmington, NC) three-run homer with two outs in the final frame capped the comeback for the Braves, who improve to 4-2. Catawba falls to 4-3, losing for the second day in a row in the opponents last at bat. After allowing a run on a double and two wild pitches in the first, Catawba took control and build an 11-3 edge after five innings. Nick Lefko (Faith, NC) had a two-run single in the second to put the Tribe on top. Pembroke scored two unearned runs in the third, getting a sacrifice fly by Andy Jewell (Springfield, VA) and another run on a passed ball. Aaron Rimer (Salisbury, NC) put the Tribe back on top in its third, singling home a pair of runs. Matt Baker (Charlotte, NC) delivered a two-run single with two outs in the fourth to extend the lead to 7-3, then Southard started a four-run fifth with a two-run homer. Tribe starter Zach Snyder (Lexington, NC) would allow a home run to Drew Paul (Raleigh, NC) in the sixth before leaving after seven. He allowed four runs, just two earned, on four hits, while recording seven strikeouts. Jake Talley ((Royersford, PA) pitched a perfect eighth inning for the Tribe, but Thomas Giles (Lynchburg, VA) could not get an out during the six batters he faced to start the ninth. Paul and Rutledge singled to start the inning, then two players were hit by a pitch before a two-run double by Matt Scott (Dobson, NC). After another single, Giles was lifted for Chris Abernathy (Claremont, NC), who allowed a single, then picked a runner off second and struck out a batter. Jewell doubled home a run to cut the lead to 11-10 and after Paul was intentionally walked, Rutledge homered to put Pembroke on top. Eric Stewart pitched a perfect ninth for the Braves to earn his first save. Paul and Rutledge each had a pair of hits for Pembroke, including a homer each. Lefko and Chad Hill (Bennett, NC) had three hits for Catawba. #####
