Women's Basketball Tops Anderson to Grab Share of SAC Lead
SALISBURY, NC -- Catawba opened the new year with a 67-59 win over visiting Anderson in South Atlantic Conference women’s basketball action at Goodman Gym on Saturday afternoon. The win improves the Catawba Indians to 7-3 overall and into a tie for first place in the SAC with 5-1 mark. The Trojans fall to 7-5 and 3-3.
Catawba overcame 36% shooting by grabbing 18 offensive rebounds and helping force 23 Anderson turnovers. Mallary Clay (Lansing, NC/Ashe Co. HS) scored a career-high 18 points to pace the Lady Indians, while Jelena Ciric (Belgrade, SERBIA/Sporska Gimnzija/Miami-Dade CC) canned all four of her three-point shots to tally 13 points.
Anderson was led by Jasmine Franklin (Simpsonville, SC), who came off the bench to score 15 points on 7-of-9 shooting. Lesley Woods (Raleigh, NC) followed with 10 points and Sierra Simpson (Simpsonville, NC) scored nine points and grabbed seven rebounds.
Catawba never trailed in the contest and used a 9-2 run, capped by a Ciric three-pointer, to go up 24-13 with 7:19 to go in the half. The Trojans cut the margin down to five at the break, trailing 32-27.
Ciric pushed the lead back to nine at 42-33 on a three-pointer with 17:16 left. Anderson went on an 8-2 run to get within 44-41 after a jumper by Heather Jankowy (Walhalla, SC), but Chloe Bully (Hannut BELGIUM/KOL Landen) answered with a three-pointer for the Lady Indians. The lead went back to double digits at 51-41 after a three-pointer from Ciric at the 8:54 mark.
Anderson closed within five on several occasions in the final five minutes, but Catawba was solid at the line to hold on. The Lady Indians made 8-of-10 in the final 44 seconds.
The Trojans shot 50% in the second half and finished the game at 43%, but struggled at the line where they made just 13-of-25 (52%). Catawba made 17-of-27 (63%) at the stripe and canned six three-pointers. Zhaquondalee Greer (Greensboro, NC/Academy at Smith/Charleston So.) also had double figures for Catawba with 12 points.
Catawba will next host Newberry on Wednesday at 6 p.m.
