Two school records highlight first day at Swimming Championships

RADFORD, VA – Catawba College stands sixth after the first day of competition at the Southern States Swimming and Diving Championships held Thursday at the Dedmon Center Natatorium on the campus of Radford University. The Lady Indians had school-record swims in the 200 freestyle relay and by junior Beth Gill (Woodbury, NJ) in the 50 freestyle, helping earn 83 points on the opening day. The Lady Indians twice broke the school record in the 200 free relay. The team of Gill, freshman Erin Hyde (Lilburn, GA), sophomore Mindy Ilg (Charlotte, NC) and freshman Vickie Ryan (Akron, OH), swam a 1:43.82 in the preliminaries, then bettered that with a 1:43.62 in the final to place fourth. Gill bested her own school mark in the 50 free prelim with a time of 25.10 and was eighth in the final on a time of 25.25. Ryan would set a freshman mark in the 200 IM, finishing sixth in a time of 2:13.25, just fourth-tenths of second off the school record. The 400 medley relay team of Hyde, Ryan, Ilg and Gill swam to a sixth place finish, posting the second best time in school history at 4:15.35. Ilg was 14th in the 500 free in a time of 5:25.27.
