Women's Basketball regains its two-game cushion in SAC with win over Mars Hill

MARS HILL, NC -- Catawba College rallied from a nine-point second half deficit and defeated host Mars Hill 67-62 in South Atlantic Conference women’s basketball action on Saturday afternoon at Stanford Arena. The win gives the Lady Indians a two-game lead in the SAC with just four games remaining, three of which are at home where Catawba has won 14 in a row and 32 of 33. Catawba improves to 16-5 overall and 8-2 in the SAC, while the Lady Lions fall to 11-12 and 4-6.Catawba led most of the first half and by as many as seven at 22-15 with 8:15 in the half, but the Lady Lions closed the half on 19-7 run over the final 6:14 to lead 34-29 at the break. Mars Hill would jump out to a nine-point lead on a couple of occasions in the final half, the last at 42-33 with 16:27 to play. Isiaette Darden (Wilson, NC) hit a pair of three-pointers as the Lady Indians cut the margin to 44-41 with 13:58 left and eventually tied the game at 51-51 on a layin by Danyel Locklear (Pembroke, NC) with 8:31 remaining. Darden would hit consecutive layups to build the Catawba lead to 55-51, but Mars Hill fought back to tie the score at 59-59 on a layin by Holly Carringer (Murphy, NC) with 4:12 left. A pair of free throws by Tiffany Atkins (Barnardsville, NC) tied the game at 61-61, but that would be the final tie of the game. Locklear hit a layup and Lynn Morancie (Houston, TX) added a jumper to put Catawba on top 65-61 with 2:25 to go. Atkins would hit one of two free throws at the 2:11 mark to close within 65-62, but the Lady Lions would miss their final three shots and commit two turnovers the rest of the way. A jumper by Locklear with 27 seconds left sealed the win for the Lady Indians. Dorthell Little (Rockingham, NC) led Catawba with 16 points and eight rebounds. Locklear and Darden each added a dozen, while Locklear also pulled down eight boards. Carringer tallied 17 for Mars Hill, while Atkins added 15 and four steals. Catawba had just five second-half turnovers in the comeback, while the Lady Lions committed 15 in the final 20 minutes. #####
