Huntley's Career High 19 Points Paces Women's Basketball Past Coker
HARTSVILLE, SC -- Catawba got a career-best 19 points from Jada Huntley (Indian Trail, NC/Porter Ridge HS) in claiming a 78-71 win over host Coker in South Atlantic Conference women’s basketball action at Timberlake-Lawton Gym on Wednesday night. The win improves the Catawba Indians to 8-5 overall and 6-3 in the SAC, while snapping a two-game losing streak. The Cobras are also 8-5 and 6-3.
Huntley made 5-of-10 shots and canned all eight of her free throws to lead the Lady Indians. She also added seven rebounds. Chloe Bully (Hannut, BELGUIM/KOL Landen) followed with 16 points, moving within 10 of reaching 1,000 for her career. Tanesha Stenson tried to lead a rally for Coker, scoring 22 points. Most of her damage came from the line where she made 13-of-17 tries.
The game was tight early in the second half with Catawba leading by just a point at 31-30 following back-to-back three-pointers from the Cobras' Kelley Godbout. The Lady Indians spurted ahead from there, scoring six straight to go up 37-30 at the 16:08 mark. Another surge pushed the margin to 65-46 following a three-pointer from Jelena Ciric (Belgrade, SERBIA/Sporska Gimnzija/Miami-Dade CC) with 9:08 to play.
Coker began to fight back in the final nine minutes. Stenson followed a basket with a three-pointer and Hailey Yohn's three-pointer sliced the Lady Indian lead to 65-54 with 7:38 left. When Jasmine Evans scored with 1:50 remaining, Catawba's lead was just 67-63.
Huntley hit two free throws with 1:37 to play to end a near three minute draught for Catawba and canned a three-pointer on the next possession to make it 72-65 with 50 seconds left. Bully iced it down the stretch as she was perfect on six free throws attempts in the final 37 seconds.
Both team shook off cold shooting first halves. The Lady Indians improved from 33% to 48%, while Coker went from 26% to 62%, hitting on 16-of-26 in the final half and 6-of-8 from long range. Catawba was solid at the stripe, making 28-of-35 (80%), with Coker hitting on 20-of-32 (63%). Catawba, which leads the SAC in turnover margin, committed eight fewer miscues than the Cobras.
Antoinette McPhail (Timmonsville, SC/Darlington HS/Paine), with 12 points, and Zhaquondalee Greer (Greensboro, NC/Academy at Smith/Charleston Southern), with 10 points, also reached double figures for Catawba. Mallary Clay (Lansing, NC/Ashe Co. HS) and Emma Ucinski (Atlanta, GA/St. Pius X HS) just missed with nine points each. Clay posted five steals.
Godbout added 13 points and seven rebounds for Coker. Evans also reached double figures with 11 points.
Catawba will finish up a three-game road swing on Saturday afternoon with a 2 p.m. tip-off at Mars Hill.
