Bully Eclipses 1,000 Career Points, But Women's Basketball Suffers Late Collapse at Mars Hill
MARS HILL, NC -- Mars Hill rallied late to claim a 78-76 win over visiting Catawba in South Atlantic Conference women’s basketball action at Stanford Arena on Saturday afternoon. The Lions improve to 3-11 overall and 2-8 in the SAC with the win. The Catawba Indians fall to 8-6 and 6-4.
Chloe Bully (Hannut, BELGUIM/KOL Landen) led Catawba with 20 points and went over 1,000 points in her career in the loss. She added seven rebounds and five assists. Antoinette McPhail (Timmonsville, SC/Darlington HS/Paine) followed with 16 points. Ansley Ricker led the Lions with 19 points, while Brittany Baker added 17.
Catawba led most of the game, but collapsed in the final seven minutes. The Lady Indians committed eight of their 26 turnovers over the last five minutes of the contest.
The Lady Indians led 69-61 with 7:23 left after a put-back by Jelena Ciric (Belgrade, SERBIA/Sporska Gimnzija/Miami-Dade CC), but Mars Hill held Catawba without a field goal over the next five minutes to regain the lead. Baker capped an 11-2 run for the Lions on a layup with 5:02 left to give Mars Hill a 72-71 edge.
Free throws by Ciric and McPhail had the Lady Indians up 74-72 with three minutes remaining before a three-pointer from Ricker gave Mars Hill a 75-74 lead. Bully pulled Catawba even, but Baker scored the final points with 1:42 left for Mars Hill. Catawba turned the ball over on three straight possessions, but still had a final chance to tie after Ricker missed two free throws with 28 seconds to go. The Lady Indians managed only a rushed three-pointer in the final seconds from McPhail that was off the mark.
Mars Hill controlled the first 10 minutes and used a 7-0 run to lead 25-18 after a Ricker basket with nine minutes left before the break. Down 27-20, Catawba responded with 10 straight points to take its first lead on a three-pointer from Ciric with six minutes remaining. The Lady Indians led by five to eight points most of the second half until the late rally by the Lions.
Ciric added 11 points for Catawba with Jada Huntley (Indian Trail, NC/Porter Ridge HS) scoring 10 points. Catawba shot only 40% for the game, but grabbed 20 offensive rebounds. The Lady Indians had a 41-33 edge on the glass.
Mars Hill shot 52.6% in the win. Autumn Ward and Paige Chavis rounded out the double figure scorers for Mars Hill with 11 and 10 points, respectively. Ward grabbed seven rebounds and Chavis handed out seven assists.
Catawba returns home on Wednesday as the Indians will host Wingate at 6 p.m.
