Men's Basketball Beaten Badly on the Boards in Loss at Mars Hill
MARS HILL, NC -- Mars Hill won the battle on the boards, leading to a 64-54 win over visiting Catawba in South Atlantic Conference men's basketball action on Saturday afternoon at Stanford Arena. The Lions improve to 3-12 overall and 1-9 in the SAC, while the Catawba Indians fall to 4-10 and 4-6.
The Lions held a 56-42 edge in rebounding, including a 22-11 edge on the offensive glass. Isaiah Cuthbertson did the most damage as he pulled down 24 rebounds (11 offensive) and scored 26 points. Devonte Williams was the only other Mars Hill player to reach double figures with 14 points. He dished out seven assists.
Vismantas Marijosius (Kedainiai, LITHUANIA/North Hills) scored 13 points to pace Catawba. Tyrece Little (Greenville, NC/Rose HS) followed with 12 points. Each grabbed a team-high seven rebounds.
After surrendering the opening basket to Catawba, Mars Hill held the lead the rest of the half. The Lions led by as many as six in the half on a couple of occasions and went to the break holding a 30-26 edge. Both teams shot under 33% for the half with the Lions' 10 offensive boards leading to 10 second-chance points.
Catawba retook the lead early in the second half and held its largest lead at 42-39 following a dunk by Little with 10:46 remaining. Nick Houston (China Grove, NC/Carson HS) put the Indians up 47-44, but the Lions reeled off the next 11 points to go up 55-47 with 4:11 left.
Marijosius hit a three-pointer and added a layup to cut the Catawba deficit to 55-52, but again the Lions surged. Mars Hill scored six straight to go up by nine and the Indians could not rally back.
Mars Hill used its big night on the boards to outscore Catawba 16-4 on second-chance points. Neither team found its shooting touch with the Lions finishing at 33.8% and Catawba at 32.3%. Mars Hill was a mere 1-of-17 from behind the arc.
Catawba returns to Goodman Gym on Wednesday as the Indians host Wingate at 8 p.m.
